CheeseIsGood's Million Dollar Musings: Sunday, June 27th

Happy Sunday everyone! Your regular Sunday compadre is off today, on his way to St. Louis, so you’re stuck with me for an extra day. I’m not going to be as wordy as my usual self in an attempt to get this out early enough for the 1:07 start time. Let’s jump right into this 12-game slate and see what we find.

Sunday Pitching

We’ve got several aces up top as well as a solid mid-tier. I’ll break these guys up into tiers and give you my favorites:

THREE ACES

Gerrit Cole at Red Sox – 33.8% K, 4.1% BB, 2.33 ERA, 2.66 SIERA
Zack Wheeler at Mets – 31.3% K, 5.9% BB, 2.36 ERA, 3.01 SIERA
Max Scherzer at Marlins – 36.1% K, 5.8% BB, 2.19 ERA, 2.73 SIERA

These are three of the best pitchers in baseball, all over 30% strikeouts and below 6% walks. Officially, I am not overly concerned about the drop-off we’ve seen from Cole over the past month, but it does give us some reason to try and separate this trio. We’ve also seen a couple weaker outings from Wheeler in his past two starts, so when we combine matchup with recent form, Max Scherzer stands out as the go-to ace on this slate. He was right back up over 100 pitches last start, and his strikeouts remain up at 38% over the past month.
