College Football News and Notes: Week 6
Quarterbacks

Player: Zach Kline/Jared Goff, QB, California
- News: Goff has been named the starting quarterback for the Golden Bears game against Washington State this weekend.
- Impact: In what should be a high scoring affair, Goff is a solid QB2 and a borderline QB1. Just realize if he does struggle, there is a solid backup waiting to play. But considering the lack of defense that is expected in this matchup, he is a solid playable option.
Player: Connor Halliday, QB, Washington State
- News: Halliday officially left the Cougars game against Stanford with a side injury, but considering the game was a rout, there is no clear indication how serious the injury is.
- Impact: The coaching staff has said they expect Halliday to play against California, which makes Halliday a top 10 quarterback this week. If he indeed misses the game, expect Austin Apodaca to start. Apodaca would be an optin in 2-QB BCS leagues only.
Player: All Texas Tech QB’s vs. Kansas
- News: While Michael Brewer has returned to practice after overcoming his back injury, the coaching staff has announced Baker Mayfield will start this weekend against Kansas.
- Impact: Mayfield makes for a solid play in all formats. He should not struggle to put up stats this weekend and is a borderline QB1 but rock solid QB2.
Player: Connor Shaw, QB, South Carolina
- News: After leaving last weeks win against Central Florida with a shoulder injury, in a surprising bit of news, Shaw is expected to start this weekend against Kentucky.
- Impact: If you play in a 2-QB BCS only league, Shaw is a solid play. If you play in a 1-QB league, there are safer options out there to use.
Player: Taylor Martinez/Tommy Armstrong, QB, Nebraska
- News: Despite the expectation he would be ready to play this weekend against Illinois, Martinez is going to miss this weekends game with his leg injury.
- Impact: If you are looking for a QB to play in his absence, do not count on an inexperienced Huskers signal caller this weekend, look for a safer option like James Franklin of Missouri. Tommy Armstrong will get another start for the Huskers but is not a strong play.
Running Backs
Player: Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia
- News: During their shootout win against LSU, Gurley hurt his ankle and watched the second half on the sidelines with a boot on his foot.
- Impact: This is terrible news for Gurley. Keith Marshall will become the lead dog for the Dawgs unless there is a miracle and he has a juicy matchup against Tennessee in Week 6.
Player: Kenyan Drake, RB, Alabama
- News: Considering this game should be over by the end of the first quarter, if you are desperate for a running back to play, expect Drake to get an extended look and produce some solid numbers.
- Impact: Drake performed well last week against Ole Miss, rushing for close to 100 yards and a touchdown. It would be a disappointment if he did not do the same this week.

Player: Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin
- News: Despite injuring his knee in the Badgers loss to the Buckeyes, Gordon is expected to play Saturday against Northwestern.
- Impact: Whew. Gordon may have avoided major injury here, but there is no telling how the team will lean on him with other capable backs around to play. Northwestern is also a solid rush defense, so this may be the week to avoid him. The Badgers have off this week, so keep this in mind next week.
Player: De’Anthony Thomas/Byron Marshall, RB, Oregon
- News: Thomas hurt his ankle on the opening kickoff of the Oregon win on Saturday at which point Marshall took the reigns and went off. News has broke late this week that Thomas will miss this weekends game against Colorado.
- Impact: With this news, Marshall is a top 10 option with the ability to rush for over 150 yards and multiple scores against a porous rush defense in Colorado. If Thomas does play, it will surely be at less then 100%, but that looks doubtful now.
Player: Venric Mark, RB, Northwestern
- News: After missing 3 games with a leg injury, Mark will return to the Wildcats lineup against Ohio State.
- Impact: Because they will likely ease him back into the gameplan, while incorporating him in with other solid backs, Mark cannot be played with confidence this week.
Wide Receivers
Player: Marqise Lee, USC
- News: Lee, arguably the most talented wide receiver in the nation, hurt his knee during USC’s loss to Arizona State and is questionable to play in the near future for the Trojans.
- Impact: Considering the coaching turnover and lack of solid QB play, no USC receivers are recommended with Lee out. Find another option week to week with Lee out of the lineup.
Player: Martavis Bryant/Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
- News: Bryant and Williams are now battling for the second wide receiver position for the Tigers behind Sammy Watkins.
- Impact: This is big news cause many thought Bryant had pulled ahead after a dominant performance against NC State a few weeks back. Bryant may have more talent, but considering the freshman is in the conversation, do not rely on Bryant as a WR2.
