Coming This Spring: FanDuel Golf
Good news golf enthusiasts, FanDuel has announced it will be adding fantasy golf to its DFS offerings this spring in time for the Masters.
As first reported by Yahoo’s Daniel Roberts, the upcoming merger with DraftKings is likely driving the change by FanDuel CEO Nigel Eccles in the event the platforms decide to become one.
The previous hesitation on why FanDuel did not offer fantasy golf was due to legal concerns that it would be considered illegal gambling. The Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) requires “multiple events,” and it was unclear if a PGA tournament would meet that requirement.
In order to satisfy this “multiple events” requirement, FanDuel’s golf offering will require you to select a new group of golfers for rounds 3 and 4 of the tournament. This difference will allow for more strategy and differs from what is offered on DraftKings, where players select one group of golfers for all rounds of the tournament.
FanDuel’s golf product will start in a private, invite-only beta. FanDuel will also run a cross-sport Tee-Off Classic promotion contest from January 22 through March 23 with a $2 entry fee for NFL, NBA, and Golf (once launched). The top 100 qualifiers will battle for the grand prize of a trip for three to play a round of golf with former Pittsburgh Steelers running back, Jerome Bettis. Golf will then come out of beta and go live in time for The Masters in April.
As a reminder, you can still subscribe to RotoGrinders’ DraftKings PGA Premium content. PGA Premium incentives will be available for FanDuel when the product is officially live.
