Daily Batter Breakdown: Mon, August 11th

Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.

There are lots of bad pitchers going tonight and strangely they are most in the bad parks as well, so there might be a few popular picks around the industry tonight. I’m looking for value with my bats tonight to afford Felix somehow on a shorter slate.

So where has this ridiculous power came from lately? Joseph is on a sick tear right now and his price hasn’t even risen that much across the industry. He faces Capuano now who is completely overperforming at this time after shutting down the Tigers on 100 pitches. Capuano is going to blow at some point considering he has given up a .800 OPS to right handed batters and 54 homers in the last 3 years and it might be tonight against a pretty solid Orioles offense stacked with righties. Joseph has really put together a soli week an is still relatively cheap for his potential tonight.

James Loney

I think my favorite team to play tonight has to be the Rays. Their offense has been much better lately compared to what it was earlier in the season and they are facing one of the worst pitchers on the mound today. Colby Lewis was solid for last game, but his overall numbers are awful and things don’t really look good for him tonight. Lewis struggles mightily against left handed batters and even though Loney hasn’t been a big name with the bat he does have a .303 average with a .759 OPS vs RHP.

Jose Altuve

Milone got what he wanted when he was traded to the Twins and with the absence of Correia, he will make the first start for them today. Milone isn’t generally terrible against RHB but in Altuve’s case it’s more of what he does against LHP. Altuve doesn’t bring much HR potential, but he’s one of the top base stealers with a great OBP. His .418 average and .982 OPS against lefties is sick and he will hit at the top of the lineup making this one even that much sweeter.

Adrian Beltre

In Globe Life Park tonight we should have one of the highest scoring games of the night with Smyly against Lewis. Smyly’s .888 OPS given up to right handers is more of a pattern an in a hitter’s park against a guy who is as good as Beltre is and hits left handers above a .900 OPS as well, I really don’t see how this ends well for Smyly tonight.

PARK-1 PARK-LR FD DD DK FF SS FTD
0.981 0.000 $3,700 $53,000

Daniel Santana

Kind of like Altuve, Santana will lead off and while he doesn’t have too much HR power he does have some and he has stolen base and triple opportunities. He has ha some ridiculously good fantasy point games and is definitely an upside play here against the Astros. Peacock has been absolutely terrible in the last 2 games giving up 7 and 8 ER and allowing homers in all of the last 4 games, and 3 in one of them. Peacock’s WHIP is 1.62 this year and he just is a great pitcher to target.

0.981 0.000 $3,300 $8,250 $3,500 $58,200 $5,700 $8,500

Josh Willingham

As I noted above, Peacock has been horrible and he’s mostly been horrible against right handed batters for some reason. RHB have hit him to a .870 OPS with more homers in less at bats. Willingham generally hits lefties better but has improved his approach against right handed pitching and still has homer power from both sides. Willingham is pretty cheap tonight but does carry some risk attached to him.

Adam Jones

The Orioles offense has been totally clicking in the last few days and the rate at which Jones is destroying lefties is ridiculous this year. I know that Capuano has been fairly solid lately but against the Orioles tonight in Camden I think he’s going to run into a few issues. Jones has absolutely destroyed lefties like I said to a 1.104 OPS which is one of the tops in the majors. He’s fairly expensive but should be well worth it against a guy who has struggled with right handers in his career.

Rajai Davis

Any time Davis hits against a lefty he’s in play. I like Santana and Altuve a bit more but if you can grab all 3 of those guys there is a really good chance of multiple steals between the 3. Davis has been cold lately but has hit right handers to a .935 OPS this year along with Locke allowing a .757 OPS and most of his HR. The Tiger’s offense feels really cold but they have to potential to break out a 10 run game any time they take the field especially against a depleted Pirates team.

Kyle Seager

Hutchison was fantastic the last time out which makes me kind of wary about using Kyle Seager or any of the Mariners today but other than the last game he really hasn’t been solid at all against lefties giving up a .787 OPS. The Mariners still have a 4 over/under in Safeco tonight and if they get there and above, Seager should be a huge part of it. Seager just isn’t a great option against lefties but when hitting against righties this year he has 16 HR and a .892 OPS which is not shabby at all.

Freddie Freeman

If you don’t like Loney tonight at first, a really nice other option which is a bit more expensive is Freddie Freeman. I’m not sure why the Dodgers wanted a guy with a 1.46 WHIP which is only barely higher than his career WHIP an almost a 5 ERA on the year. He hasn’t been good, and it’s not like we’re expecting a random breakout from him either. Freeman has been hot lately an a .874 OPS against right handed pitchers is definitely something to look at here along with Correia’s general ineptness against both sides of the plate.
