On Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Rams will battle in a highly-anticipated Week 5 affair at Sofi Stadium. Dallas has won three consecutive contests since losing Dak Prescott to an injury in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Los Angeles will be playing on a short week after losing an intra-division matchup to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4 on Monday Night Football. Oddsmakers are expecting a bounce-back performance from the Rams in this spot, pricing them as 5-point home favorites on the spread.
Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.
Dallas Cowboys
In Week 1, the Cowboys’ playoff hopes seemed to take a major blow after it was announced that Dak Prescott would miss extended time with an injury. Three weeks later, Dallas is 3-1, having defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants, and Washington Commanders. In that span, Cooper Rush has been more than serviceable – throwing for four touchdowns against no interceptions while completing over 60 percent of his pass attempts.
The defense has been even better than the offense, and enters Week 5 ranked 8th in EPA/play. Through four games, only the Philadelphia Eagles totaled more sacks than Dallas. On Sunday, this ferocious Cowboys’ pass-rush gets to play a Los Angeles offensive line that has been sacked more than every team except the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders through the first month of action. Expect Dallas to get into the Rams’ backfield frequently this afternoon.
Los Angeles Rams
Following a Super Bowl victory, the Rams have not performed up to expectations on either side of the ball through four games. Offensively, Los Angeles ranks 28th in EPA/play entering play in Week 5. Matthew Stafford has struggled mightily, tossing six interceptions in four games, which ranks 31st in the league. Stafford and Allen Robinson have failed to develop any type of consistent rapport, with Robinson having only nine catches for 95 receiving yards in his first month as part of the Rams’ receiving room. If Los Angeles is unable to establish the run on Sunday, they could find life difficult once again this afternoon.
Defensively, the Rams have been good, but not great – ranking 18th in EPA/play after having played the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, and San Francisco 49ers. Los Angeles has been especially vulnerable in the secondary, ranking 25th in Dropback EPA/play, 23rd in opponent completion percentage, and 20th in opponent yards per pass attempt. Fortunately for Los Angeles, their biggest defensive strength – defending the run – has been Dallas’ biggest offensive strength early in the year, which should allow this group to turn in a good performance in this spot.
Cowboys vs. Rams Picks & Predictions
Los Angeles established a reputation as an offensive juggernaut last fall, but their production has fallen-off considerably to begin 2022 after numerous offseason departures on this side of the ball. Most notably, the offensive line has been woefully incapable of protecting Matthew Stafford – which has led to an abundance of poor decision-making with the football. Defensively, the Rams are still good enough to slow down Cooper Rush and company, which could make for a defensive battle at Soft Stadium in Week 5. Take the under here.
