Call of Duty League So Far: The Road to Minnesota

Let’s look at the season points standings provided by the league twitter account, leading up to this week’s Call of Duty League Minnesota event.

Note: Ten points are given out to a team for each series that they win, you also get extra points for finishing first at the event. Not every team has the same amount of events played.

Teams on the Rise: OpTic Gaming Los Angeles, New York Subliners, and the Toronto Ultra (performing much better as of late)

Struggling Teams: Minnesota Rokkr and Florida Mutineers (underperforming lately compared to the standings)

The season up to this point has been proven to give us much more parity than in the past in competitive CoD. Usually, you have your top level teams that cannot be touched by any middle or lower tier teams and they are always expected to win every match they are in. This league has shown to be different. The Call of Duty League runs deep in 2020, in terms of player talent, and has made things unpredictable. You never know when a team like Dallas could lose to a team like Toronto, which just makes the games that much better to watch. The league is very similar to the NFL in that aspect, as the parity of that league is what has made it so healthy for as long as it has.

This week, the best of the best finally meet again! Up until this point we have only had one event that included all three of the top teams: Atlanta FaZe, Dallas Empire, and Chicago Huntsman. That CDL event with all three teams was back in week six at Call of Duty League: Chicago. The result was a Dallas Empire victory over Atlanta FaZe, with the Huntsman finishing fourth. Chicago has otherwise played Dallas a handful of times, holding a 3-1 record versus the squad. The presence of all these teams in this event is very exciting for the fans, and for DFS it should lead to some very high quality play. The match that the community has really been waiting for is Atlanta FaZe vs Chicago Huntsman. With the likes of Simp, aBeZy, and Cellium on ATL going against Scump and Formal, it is a highly anticipated matchup that we should get at this event. It’s great to see the high level teams finally squaring off at the same tournament again.

Call of Duty Minnesota DraftKings and FanDuel Picks

This upcoming event this Friday is the Call of Duty League: Minnesota home series event. Let’s talk about a few players to keep our eyes on as we build our initial DFS lineups.

Octane – Seattle Surge – $9,600 DK: Let’s address this player first because of a suspected role change. Octane has been considered a top player across multiple CoD titles for a while now, all while playing the main AR role. The rumor is, Seattle’s coach moved Octane to SMG. The first thought has to be, “Why change a top player’s role that he has played for years now to a dramatically different playstyle?” The reasoning, I am guessing, is that Seattle has been playing so bad that any change at this point could be an improvement. Sadly, this likely decreases Octane’s floor as a DFS play. This is because it just comes with the nature of a SMG player to struggle to maintain a high K/D while also basically being forced to be involved in more engagements than the typical main AR player does. If there is any player that could make this transition and not see much of a drop off, it would be Octane. However, it is worth noting the risk and you should monitor projections leading up to the event (sign up for Premium to access these updated projections).

Owakening – Florida Mutineers – $5,400 DK: Owakening has been considered a top amateur player for quite a while, along with the likes of MackMelts before he turned pro. Mack came in with tons of hype around him, while I have not heard the same around Owakening. I can almost guarantee that most of you have never heard of this dude, which is ok because I was not aware of him for a while either. According to CodGamepedia, Owakening has been competing in amateur tournaments since June of last year. It’s been a mixed bag of finishes, but with a few very good placings to give us hope for quality play at the pro level. I have heard enough good things to make me believe that he will be an upgrade for the Florida Mutineers, and we’ll absolutely want to be taking shots in our LineupHQ optimizer, just in case this is a diamond in the rough.

Saints – Los Angeles Guerillas – salary not yet added to DK:The last player I will cover is also one involved in a team or role change. Saints has actually played in a few matches this season and was a part of the original starting lineup of himself, Aches, Lacefield, Aqua, and Decemate. This original squad was not very good, and during that time Saints held a 0.92 K/D. This is not very impressive, but his stats were at least decent considering the lack of team skill and his role as a SMG player. He will now be replacing Spart in the new iteration of their starting lineup, which should give them a massive boost if he plays to his potential. Spart held a pathetic 0.75 K/D during his time in the starting lineup, which is a considerable 0.17 drop off compared to Saints. This change could be much needed for an improving Los Angeles Guerillas squad, and should keep them on the road of improvement. Look for both LAG and Saints to impress this weekend at the Minnesota online event.
