DraftKings + FanDuel PGA DFS Player Salary Analysis: 3M Open
It’s another week and there is another million dollar prize up for grabs on DraftKings. In addition, they have the Drive the Green and the Slice, which are both 150-max tournaments that award $50,000 and $7,500 to first, respectively. My personal favorites are the single-entry tournaments and DraftKings is offering them at every buy-in level. FanDuel significantly reduced the size of their offerings, so hopefully that’s not a trend that will continue moving forward. With that said, they still have $30,000 to first in their $9 Eagle and $25,000 to first in their $555 Monster.

It was a crazy week at Muirfield Village, as we got to see the best in the world fight to save par on most of the holes. Jon Rahm walked away with the victory, even after he was assessed a two-stroke penalty once the tournament ended. If you weren’t a fan of golfers shooting eight-over par, then you will be happy to watch the 3M Open this week. Last year was the first time the event was in the PGA Tour rotation and it provided a great finish down the stretch with Matthew Wolff besting Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa. The winning score should be at least 20-under par this week and the best way to get there is to have a good week ball striking. Three of the top seven finishers last year didn’t gain more than a single stroke putting, which is far from the norm.

DraftKings and FanDuel 3M Open Salary Analysis Table
In the table below, you will find Vegas odds, salaries, percentage salary cap columns, and odds percentage columns. The “DK & FD Cap %” columns show how much of the respective salary on each site each golfer costs. The “DK – FD %” column shows how much cheaper a golfer is on DraftKings compared to FanDuel. The “DK & FD Odds” columns take each golfer’s salary rank and compare it to their odds rank. The higher the percentage, the more value they provide on that specific site (relative to their outright odds).

DraftKings + FanDuel DFS Salary Analysis for the 3M Opent
Paul Casey
DraftKings: $10,100 / FanDuel: $11,200
I had to write up Casey this week because I had to talk about the eight he wrote down after playing one of the par threes on Friday at Muirfield Village. He was in the bunker right over the green and managed to hit the ball 40 yards over the green (and the water) into the rough. He then chunked two straight chips into the water and carded an eight. He actually fought back and found himself inside the cut line with a few holes to play, but two late bogeys led to a missed cut. Look for him to bounce back this week as one of the most talented golfers in the field. TPC Twin Cities is a course that rewards ball striking and Casey might be the best ball striker to tee it up this week. I have him ranked second in my model this week (available for premium members) and he’s the fifth most expensive on both DraftKings and FanDuel.
Russell Henley
DraftKings: $9,200 / FanDuel: $10,500
Strictly comparing DFS salaries to the outright market, Henley appears to be underpriced. There is a lot that goes into my player selection process each week, but I always take a look at the golfers that provide value in DFS compared to the betting markets. Henley missed the cut in his first event since the restart, but his irons were hot fire in the following two events. He gained 8.2 strokes on approach at the Travelers Championship and then gained 6.0 strokes on approach at the Workday Charity Open. While he missed the cut here last year, it was right on the number and it never hurts to have experience at a course that is new to the PGA Tour.
Harris English
DraftKings: $9,000
English feels appropriately priced on FanDuel and a little underpriced on DraftKings. Everything lined up for him at the Memorial Tournament last week, but I was a little hesitant to play him after he tested positive for COVID. I wasn’t too worried about the virus, but I wasn’t sure how much practice he was able to get in during his 14-day quarantine. It clearly didn’t impact him, as he gained strokes in all four categories (off the tee, on approach, around the green, and putting) and finished in a tie for 13th. He now has top 20 finishes in nine of his last 14 events, which is pretty crazy given how bad his form has been over the last few years. In this weak field, he could easily contend and potentially even walk away with a win.
Branden Grace
FanDuel: $7,000
Grace is priced at the bare minimum on FanDuel this week, which is wild given the fact that he’s the 79th ranked golfer in the world. I can tell you exactly what led to this price — he was a late add to the field and he didn’t have any odds posted at the time FanDuel released their salaries. Their algorithm certainly includes outright odds in the formula and without an outright number, it led to him being priced at the stone minimum. With him being so cheap, you can play three of the most expensive golfers and still build a quality lineup. Even though Grace has missed three cuts in a row, he gained 4.5 strokes on approach in two rounds at the Memorial Tournament last week. This is a much softer field and a much easier course.
