DraftKings + FanDuel PGA DFS Player Salary Analysis: Rocket Mortgage Classic
For the fourth week in a row, we have a Millionaire Maker on DraftKings. While this tournament might not be in the best interest of your bankroll, where else do you get the chance to win a million dollars playing fantasy golf? They are also offering a $200 single-entry buy-in (my favorite tournament of the week) that could fill a full day before the event starts. There is also a $5 Drive the Green and a $555 Signature Hole with big payouts to first. FanDuel is running back their $9 eagle, which awards $100,000 to first. They are also offering a $555 buy-in offering the same first place prize. With so much money up for grabs, let’s get into the DraftKings and FanDuel PGA DFS player salary analysis.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic doesn’t have nearly as stacked of a field as we’ve seen over the last three weeks. Most of the big names played in all three of those events and were looking for a week off. Detroit Golf Club is a Par 72 that measures just under 7,400 yards. Last year was the first time we’d seen the course in rotation on the PGA Tour, so we don’t have a ton of data to work with. However, fairways and greens were both easy to hit in last year’s renewal. Scrambling was easier than tour average and each of the top 20 golfers on the leaderboard gained strokes with their putter. The thought floating around the industry is that we need golfers that hit irons and putt well, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a ball striker come out on top this week.

DraftKings and FanDuel Rocket Mortgage Classic Salary Analysis Table
In the table below, you will find Vegas odds, salaries, percentage salary cap columns, and odds percentage columns. The “DK & FD Cap %” columns show how much of the respective salary on each site each golfer costs. The “DK – FD %” column shows how much cheaper a golfer is on DraftKings compared to FanDuel. The “DK & FD Odds” columns take each golfer’s salary rank and compare it to their odds rank. The higher the percentage, the more value they provide on that specific site (relative to their outright odds).

DraftKings + FanDuel DFS Salary Analysis for the Rocket Mortgage Classic
Tony Finau
DraftKings: $9,300 / FanDuel: $10,600
Finau missed the cut at last week’s Travelers Championship, but there wasn’t anything alarming in his statistics. He gained strokes off the tee and around the green, but didn’t take advantage of the easy holes. Ultimately, that’s what caused him to miss the cut. It’s somewhat of a perfect storm though, as we have a better course for Finau on tap this week in a much weaker field. Most golfers saw a huge price bump (I’m looking at you, Doc Redman), while Finau is only $9,300 on DraftKings and $10,600 on FanDuel. He should be able to hit a bunch of drivers this week and take advantage of the four par fives. His best putting surfaces are poa and bent and the greens at Detroit Golf Club are a mix of both.
Brian Harman
DraftKings: $7,900 / FanDuel: $9,700
Harman is another golfer that missed the cut at last week’s Travelers Championship. He didn’t miss the cut by much and similar to Finau, he gained strokes off the tee and around the green. He lost 3.7 strokes putting, which hasn’t happened since January of 2019. I like his chances to bounce back on a track that rewards good ball striking and good putting. The best part about missing a cut is that it generally leads to a lower price point the next week. If Harman would have made the cut last week, he’s be $500 more expensive on both DraftKings and FanDuel and he’d be higher owned. Harman grades out as one of the best plays in my model thanks to being ranked 15th in strokes gained approach, 13th in birdie or better percentage, and 22nd in strokes gained putting.
Tyrrell Hatton
FanDuel: $11,100
Hatton is not a player that I’m looking to target on DraftKings thanks to his hefty price tag. We were all worried about the long layoff for Hatton before the RBC Heritage, but he showed no rust in his first event since the break. He finished third thanks to gaining 3.0 strokes on approach and 9.3 strokes putting. If this course plays like it did last year, golfers that get hot with their irons and putt well are going to benefit the most. As you can see table above, Hatton only takes up 18.5% of the salary cap on FanDuel, compared to 21.4% of the cap on DraftKings. Additionally, he rates out as the best value on FanDuel relative to Vegas odds at +25%.
Matthew Wolff
DraftKings: $6,800
Wolff is a wildcard play of the week, as he could be a difference maker in tournaments if he brings his A-game. Coming out of college, he was ranked above both Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa and we see what they’ve been able to do over the last six months. Wolff already has his first PGA Tour, but his recent form is the big question mark. He hasn’t had a high finish for quite some time, but is now only $6,800 on DraftKings. He tends to play well on easier courses and Detroit Golf Club certainly fits the mold (winner here last year was 25 under par). While he did miss the cut here last year, it doesn’t hurt that he’s seen the course.
