DraftKings + FanDuel PGA DFS Salary & Projection Analysis: WGC St. Jude Invitational
This is the first week since the restart that we haven’t seen a Millionaire Maker on DraftKings. This is likely due to a number of reasons. First off, this is a WGC event with a limited field and no cut. Additionally, MLB is back in full swing and has the attention of many DFS players. And finally, we have a major next week that everyone is gearing up for. DraftKings is running the Southwind Special that awards $500,000 to first with a buy-in of only $25. They also have the $5 Drive the Green, the $200 single-entry Driver, and the $555 multi-entry Signature Hole. FanDuel has upped their contests a little from last week with $50,000 first place offerings in the $15 Eagle and the $555 Monster.

We have seen nothing but carnage since the restart, so a WGC event should be a nice change of pace. Barring a withdrawal (which is certainly possible given some of the names in the field and the fact that there is a major next week), all golfers are guaranteed to play four rounds. TPC Southwind is a Par 70 that stretches just over 7,200 yards. There are more balls hit in the water here than at any other course on the PGA Tour, so precision off the tee and on approach is critical. From a statistical standpoint, the fairways and greens have both been difficult to hit here over the years. This places a bigger emphasis on strokes gained around the green because there will naturally be more scrambling opportunities. If you like putting splits, TPC Southwind now has bermuda greens.

DraftKings and FanDuel WGC St. Jude Invitational Salary Analysis Table
In the table below, you will find Vegas odds, salaries, percentage salary cap columns, and odds percentage columns. The “DK & FD Cap %” columns show how much of the respective salary on each site each golfer costs. The “DK – FD %” column shows how much cheaper a golfer is on DraftKings compared to FanDuel. The “DK & FD Odds” columns take each golfer’s salary rank and compare it to their odds rank. The higher the percentage, the more value they provide on that specific site (relative to their outright odds).

DraftKings + FanDuel DFS Salary & Projection Analysis for the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational
The no cut dynamic should alter our strategy a bit when it comes to DFS. With all golfers expected to play four rounds, we can be a little more aggressive in our lineup construction. It’s important to chase winning equity this week, whether that’s at the very top of the pricing or in the range right below it. In order to place in your DFS contests, you will likely need to roster the winner or at very least, a couple golfers that finish in the top five.
I expect the stars and scrubs approach to be popular this week and rightly so because we don’t have to worry about the cheap golfers missing the cut. If you are MME’ing, I highly recommend leaving money on the table in order to avoid duplicated lineups. With a smaller field, the odds of getting duped go up drastically. Leaving at least $200 on the table should help you avoid duplicated lineups for the most part.
Rory McIlroy

DraftKings: $11,200 / Projection: 80.6
FanDuel: $11,900 / Projection: 82.1
McIlroy has played in four events since the restart and has yet to finish inside the top 10. He hasn’t missed a cut during that stretch, but his recent form clearly isn’t where it was before the hiatus when he rattled off seven straight top five finishes. With the PGA Championship next week, he’ll look to sharpen his game in Memphis. He nearly won here last year when he was paired with Brooks Koepka in the final group, but he had another letdown of a Sunday (which has been a common theme over the last year). With all of that said, he loves WGC events, he’s still the number one golfer in my model and in the model here at RotoGrinders, and he’s pretty cheap relative to his usual salary. Perhaps getting back on bermuda greens can jump-start his season.
Xander Schauffele

DraftKings: $9,800 / Projection: 72.4
FanDuel: $11,200 / Projection: 75.2
No matter how hard I try, I can’t find a reason to fade Schauffele this week. The last time we saw him was at the Memorial Tournament where he shot six over par on Thursday and bounced back to finish in a tie for 13th. For the week, he gained nearly 12 strokes tee to green. He clearly loves no-cut events, as he’s posted three wins and three seconds in such tournaments over the last couple of years. While he doesn’t have the best course history at TPC Southwind, he’s finished in the top half of the field in both appearances. He’s affordable, he has winning upside, and he offers a high floor.
Paul Casey

DraftKings: $7,800 / Projection: 64.6
FanDuel: $8,800 / Projection: 65.2
Casey has cost me a lot of money over the last two weeks. He missed the cut at the Memorial Tournament thanks to an eight on a par three and he missed the cut at the 3M Open thanks to one of the worst putting performances of any golfer in the field. While two missed cuts is far from ideal, he gained nearly seven strokes ball striking in those two events combined. He has two wins on bermuda grass (both at the Valspar Championship) and his elite ball striking should help him avoid the many water hazards at TPC Southwind. And hey, we don’t have to worry about him missing the cut this week. Mr. Casey, it is redemption week.
Brandt Snedeker

DraftKings: $6,400 / Projection: 62.3
FanDuel: $7,600 / Projection: 58.2
If you like to rely strictly on recent form, Snedeker might not be the value play for you this week. He’s missed two cuts in a row and has lost strokes off the tee in eight straight events. However, he tends to play well in WGC events and Par 70 courses seem to be his specialty. This is not a course that you can bomb and gouge, which plays right into the hands of Snedeker. He’s one of the best scramblers and one of the best putters in the field. He’s played well here in the past, posting finishes of T27 and T6 in his last two appearances. For someone priced close to the minimum, I like his chances to post a top 25 finish.
