Expert Consensus Rankings: Accuracy Report

Currently listening to: Alejandro, by Lady Gaga.

I’ve never actively listened to this song in my life (I’m pretty certain I’ve never actively listened to Lady Gaga at all), yet I somehow know half the words. Maybe that’s not surprising. Half the words are “Alejandro.”

More surprising is that this is what I am choosing to listen to at the moment. It’s just been that kind of week, I guess.

“What kind of week is that?”

I wish I knew. If I knew, I would take steps to prevent having one such week again; starting my Friday with Lady Gaga is not exactly in my plan of perfect ways to begin a day.

Having said that: I’m not actually beginning the day. I’m writing this at 4:00 a.m., and I am just now considering going to sleep. Maybe I’ll go to sleep soon. Who knows. But before you start thinking I’m weird, I have a story that tops my own erratic sleep schedule:

JeffElJefe texted me at 2:30 a.m. a couple days ago to say he was about to go for a run. At 2:30 in the morning. #LifeOfADFSPlayer, I guess. If you’re out at 2:30 in the morning in Southern California and you see a guy running, it might be Jeff.

Where you won’t see Jeff is in the rest of this article, because the rest of this article is focused on updating the current Top Ten in our Accuracy Rankings! (Does that count as a jab at Jeff? It might count as a jab at Jeff. Sorry, Jeff…)

Since the start of the MLB season, we have been tracking the Expert Consensus Rankings in our Premium Content section in order for our rankers to be able to compete for the title of “Most Accurate Ranker.” Today, we are unveiling our first set of “Accuracy Ranking Standings”!

How the “accuracy ranking system” works:

Accuracy Rankings are based on the point-per-dollar production of the players ranked, with higher-ranked players accounting for a higher weight of a ranker’s score. A ranker’s performance on the day is set against the performance of the other rankers on that day, in order for us to gain a clear picture of where rankers stack up against one another from day to day.

Part of our thinking in tracking Accuracy Rankings was that we want our Expert Consensus Rankings on RotoGrinders to be one of the most valuable quick-look tools in the world of daily fantasy sports, and by creating competition amongst our rankers, we take a huge step toward accomplishing this. After all, there is a reason our rankers are among the top DFS players out there: they not only know their stuff inside-and-out, but they are also extremely competitive. Everyone wants that top spot in our Accuracy Rankings.

Of course, the other part of our thinking in tracking Accuracy Rankings was that this is just plain fun to do! In fact, a couple weeks ago in one of my MLB Edge articles, I asked our Premium subscribers what they would like to see us add to Premium, and four different people commented to say they would love for us to track the accuracy of our rankers. Their wish was preemptively granted, as we’ve been tracking this all year!

Moving forward, we’ll dig into this every couple weeks to see how the standings are changing – so follow along as our rankers chase the title of Most Accurate Ranker!

First off: congrats to Dean for the early lead! As you’ll see below, he’s not doing too poorly in DraftKings rankings, either. And in case you forgot: you can catch Dean pretty much every evening on GrindersLive, talking about that day’s slate. Not a bad guy to listen to.

If you’re a Premium subscriber, you know that between CheeseIsGood, STLCards, and myself, we have ten articles each week (five for FanDuel, five for DraftKings) that are anywhere from 3000 to 5000 words apiece, and that break down the slate from top to bottom. The goal of these articles is for them to be data-and-research-driven, rather than “picks”-driven. Essentially, we aim to do the three or four hours of research for you that most readers do not have time to do themselves! We pass along this research – as well as our own thoughts – in order to put readers in a position where they are fully prepped for the slate, research-wise, without having to dig in top-to-bottom themselves. As such, it’s great to see all three of us ranking in the top five – with BigT crashing the party as well.

Naapstermaan is a long-time DFS veteran still dominating in anything he does, and PrimeTime and Stevie provide some of the best breakdowns you’ll read anywhere, while also bringing it in the rankings. Pepsi has been crushing in MLB for years, and is continuing to do his thing, while fan favorite EMac edges out BritDevine here by fractions of a point to round out the top ten.

STLCards is, unsurprisingly, crushing the DK rankings – with a sizable lead over everyone else. Uh…yeah – it’s pretty cool to get his top-to-bottom thoughts on the DraftKings slate three days a week…

Dean and Cheese are holding strong here, with Pepsi and PrimeTime each moving up a bit as well. TheTonyM gives us our first appearance by someone who was not in the FanDuel ranks, as he works to nudge his way into the top five! And BigT and I drop out of the Top Five, though we both hang strong in the Top Ten. Boggslite is on the edge of the Top Ten for FanDuel Accuracy Rankings, and he makes his way into the Top Ten for DraftKings – and in the final spot, we have the great DraftCheat nudging out Notorious.

We’ll be back in a couple weeks to see how the standings stack up at that point.

In the meantime: keep crushing MLB, my friends! And let’s make a date to meet up with one another at the top of the leaderboards tonight.
