FanDuel Introduces Revamped PGA Product

The initial launch of DFS golf at FanDuel was never able to gain traction, as many DFS players were confused by the split round scoring format that saw separate scores for the first two rounds of each golf tournament for four golfers, followed by separate scores for four more golfers and their final two rounds of golf.

FanDuel listened to their customer concerns, and after a brief hiatus they have made a revision to their golf product, with a full slate of offerings for the Memorial Tournament this week.

In regards to how FanDuel scores their golf contests, nothing has changed. The scoring chart (see below) remains the same for both golfer performance on an individual hole and bonuses for final placement and hot streaks.

The big difference, however, is the removal of the split round format. Now instead of two separate groups of golfers, DFS players will select eight golfers and utilize their scores for the entire golf tournament, with no decisions to be made as to which two-round grouping to choose their performance from.

The obvious strategic implication of this move by FanDuel is how difficult it will be to get all eight golfers through the two-round cut.

On DraftKings, you might see somewhere along the lines of 5-10% lineups have six out of six golfers make it through to Saturday. The additional two golfers needed on FanDuel will drop that number by a substantial factor and only a small percentage of lineups will see all eight golfers playing the final two rounds of golf. This will add strategic implications to both cash games (where safety and making the cut will be king) and GPPs (where safety will also have some value as you can really separate yourself from the field by getting all eight golfers through the cut) that will make FanDuel PGA DFS a challenging puzzle to solve on a weekly basis.
