2023 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Notes

Justin Jefferson

The Minnesota Vikings wideout will be the most coveted player at the position, so it’s worth delving into why. Last season, Justin Jefferson led the league in targets (184), catches (128), and receiving yards (1,809). This resulted in him racking up the most total fantasy points at the position by a wide margin.

But what’s wild is that Jefferson accomplished this feat while finding the end zone only eight times. The young receiver is talented, explosive, and obviously has a strong rapport with his quarterback. There’s little reason to believe his production isn’t sustainable, and should touchdown variance swing in Jefferson’s favor, he will be poised for perhaps an even bigger season.

With that said, there are plenty of options at the position that can match or surpass Jefferson’s expected season-long production.

Cooper Kupp

Last year, Cooper Kupp suffered a season-ending high ankle sprain that required surgery. While he only played nine games last season, he was averaging over ten targets per contest (and slightly more than the aforementioned Viking). Beyond being a target monster, Kupp also scored six touchdowns before he went down for the season.

Given the state of this Rams defense, Kupp will likely find himself in a number of high-scoring shootouts. And as Matthew Stafford’s favorite target, Kupp stands out as a terrific source of fantasy output in PPR leagues.

Keenan Allen

Speaking of productive wide receivers with their latest season derailed by injury, there’s Keenan Allen.

With him limited to ten games last season, it might be easy to overlook the steady output Allen gave the Chargers in the five years prior. Between 2017 and 2021, Allen averaged 6.5 catches on 9.6 targets per game. Even since December, Allen had double-digit targets in five of seven games.

Injury appeared to be the only thing hindering Keenan Allen from having another elite season. With the very capable Justin Herbert throwing the football in Kellen Moore’s offense, we should expect to see Keenan Allen return to target-hogging ways.

Robert Brown (aka Epignosis) was having lunch at a sports bar. A football game was on. He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
