Fantasy Golf: Honda Classic DK Picks & Projections
Honda Classic Preview
This should be a great week for daily fantasy golf. I’ve always seemed to have more success in the tougher tournaments because they seem to be a little easier to predict. Not only that, but we have a loaded field this week as Tiger, Rory, Scott, and Phil will all be in attendance for this event. The Honda Classic will take place on the Champions Course at PGA National in Florida. This is one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour and the weather this weekend is expected to be a little breezy which is never great for scoring conditions.
Michael Thompson will return to defend his title of this event last year, but it won’t be an easy task. To give you an idea of how tough this course is, only 17 of 140 golfers shot under par over the course of 4 rounds last year. This event has the feeling of a U.S. Open type of play. It’s one of the few events where you may actually lose points by having your golfer make the cut and move onto the weekend.
The Honda Classic will feature a standard PGA cut after the first two days of play. Top 70 plus ties will move on to the weekend. One word of advice that I will give this week is to target golfers that have played on this course before and know it well. With 78 bunkers and 27 water hazards, this course will provide trouble for a lot of golfers this week.
Honda Classic – DK Picks
The last event features picks and projections for DraftStreet, so we will switch our attention to DraftKings this week. They have quite a few large GPP’s running this week and plenty of qualifiers for their big tournaments coming up.
- Adam Scott: $9,700 – Scott does not have great history at this course, but his recent play and cheap price tag put him at the top of my list this week. He has 5 top-10 finishes in his last 9 events and should be considered one of the favorites to win. He’s cheaper than both Tiger and Rory and I think he will outplay them both. He’s certainly been more consistent than both golfers over the past year.
- Charl Schwartzel: $9,500 – Schwartzel is probably the best golfer in the world that isn’t a household name outside of golf enthusiasts. When he enters an event, he is basically a lock for a top-25 finish and he has a strong chance of winning each week. Schwartzel tied for 5th at the Northern Trust Open a couple of weeks ago and should be in for a very nice performance this week at the tough PGA National course.
- Graham McDowell: $8,900 – If you are looking for a player that fits this course well, look no further than Mr. McDowell. He has posted top-10 finishes in each of his last 3 starts in this event and has all the tools to play well again this week. McDowell played well in last week’s match play event and should be able to carry over some of that hot putting into this week. He’s quite a bit cheaper than the top names in this tournament, but could easily end up placing higher than most of them.
- Billy Horschel: $8,000 – Horschel is one of my dark horse picks to make some noise this week. He played really well in this event last year with the exception of one round. He finished 6 over par, but shot a disastrous 81 in the third round. If you take out that round, he was 5-under in his other 3 rounds. Horschel made a lot of noise during this time last season and I think he has a good chance of finishing in the top 10 this week.
Sleeper of the Week:
- Thomas Bjorn: $4,900 – Bjorn is the cheap play that stands out this week in the rankings. His cheap price tag really lets you fill up the rest of your roster with top golfers. Bjorn should be able to make the cut which is really all you are hoping for when you roster such a cheap golfer. He’s made 7 of his last 8 cuts and should be able to use his experience to his advantage this week.

I have a new addition to the projections this week. I have added Average Odds to finish in the top 10. These are now weighted in the formula along with Odds to Win and as Percentage of Cuts Made.
