Fantasy Golf: Wyndham Championship Picks & Projections

Wyndham Championship Picks

I’m running a little short on time this week, so there is no introduction to the tournament. That said, the key stats to target this week are greens in regulation, strokes gained putting, proximity to the hole, and scrambling. Here are my plays for the week:

brandt snedeker pga 300x200

Brandt Snedeker: $10,200 – The Sned Master is entering this event in terrific form. He has 6 Top-25 finishes in his last 7 events. With Snedeker, it’s all about his putter and he should enter this week with plenty of confidence in hit putting. Snedeker has 2 Top-10 finishes on this course. While his GIR stats don’t look great, they have improved greatly in recent weeks. He’s ranked 16th in strokes gained putting and has plenty to play for with his Ryder Cup chances likely on the line.

Hideki Matsuyama: $10,000 – Matsuyama was one of my favorite value plays last week and he ended up making the cut in spectacular fashion. He birdied #17 and then followed it up with an eagle on #18 to barely make the cut. He’s been playing some great golf recently. In addition to a win, he also has 8 straight Top 40 finishes. He’s a good ball striker and tends to knock the ball very close to the hole (12th in proximity to the hole). If you can find a way to get both Matsuyama and Snedeker in your lineups, you’ll likely be in for a great week.

Billy Horschel: $9,100 – Horschel is my dark horse to contend and possibly even win this week. He’s one of the best ball strikers on tour and I think he’ll go overlooked after a missed cut and a 59th place finish in his last 2 events. Both of those were majors though and this week features and extremely watered down field. Before the Open Championship, he had knocked out 5 straight Top-26 finishes. He’s made the cut here in each of his last 2 tries and can really shoot some low rounds.

Other Studs to Consider: Nick Watney: $9,100, Brendan De Jonge: $8,700

Chad Campbell: $8,000 – The Campbell play is all about the stats this week. He’s ranked 1st in greens in regulation, 12th in proximity to the hole, and 36th in scrambling. While he’s not the best putter on tour, he knocks it close and tends to give himself a ton of birdie opportunities. Campbell has made the cut here in 2 of his last 3 tries and posted a T-4th place finish here in 2012. I like his chances to make some noise again this week.

David Toms: $6,900 – When you factor in price, Toms is probably my favorite play on the board. His Vegas odds look good, he has posted Top-20 finishes here in 3 of his last 4 tries, he is in good form with T-26th and T-13th place finishes in his last 2 events, and the stats all support the play. Toms is ranked 18th in greens in regulation, 78th in strokes gained putting, and 29th in scrambling.

Andrew Svoboda: $4,900 – Svoboda is my cheap flier this week. He’s been playing some good golf recently as he’s made 6 of his last 7 cuts. He also has some experience on this course with a T-37th place finish here last year. Svoboda is ranked in the Top 85 in greens in regulation, proximity to the hole, and scrambling. I’m hoping that he can make the cut this week and at that price, anything above that is a bonus.

Other Value Plays to Consider: Scott Piercy: $7,500, Retief Goosen: $7,000

Good luck this week Grinders!
