Week 4

The 2018 season has been the year of scoring so far. Teams are scoring 23.2 points per game versus 21.7 in 2017, and it’s not just the effect of more penalties. Fundamental measures of offensive efficiency are also up with yards per play rising to 5.5 from 5.3.

It’s commonly known that the NFL is a passing league, and an influx of talent at the position is commonly cited for the increase in scoring. Teams are averaging 6.4 net yards per pass versus 6.1 last season. But if you look further into the past, it might not be the sea change people are citing. Net yards per pass were only slightly higher at 6.4 in both 2016 and 2015.

There could simply be the perception of a dramatic increase in offense with a handful of high-profile games over the last few weeks smashing 50+ point totals.

This week, the main slate doesn’t feature the Broncos-Chiefs, Steelers-Ravens or Rams-Vikings games with respective totals of 56, 51 and 49.5.
