Greenbrier Classic Picks & Projections - DraftStreet
Greenbrier Classic Preview
The PGA Tour heads to the Old White TPC Course for the Greenbrier Classic this week. This will be the 5th edition of the event following the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2010. Previous champions include: Jonas Blixt (2013), Ted Potter, Jr. (2012), Scott Stallings (2011), and Stuart Appleby (2010). This has been an event that has yet to feature a big name on top of the leaderboard when it’s all said and done. It will be interesting to see if that’s the case again this week.
The Old White TPC Course is a 7,287 yard Par-70 that features only two Par 5’s, both of which are on the front 9. Low scores can be shot here as evidenced by a 59 from Stuart Appleby in his closing round in 2010. As far as types of players that do well here, you want to target golfers that are solid from tee to green and are able to make putts. The two stats that I’ll be focusing on this week are ball striking and strokes gained putting. Driving accuracy typically isn’t a huge factor here, but it certainly never hurts.
Greenbrier Classic Picks – DraftStreet
Before we get into this week’s picks, let’s quickly recap last week’s picks at the Quicken Loans National. Here are the picks and their corresponding finishes last week: Jason Day (MC), Brendan Todd (T-5), Billy Horschel (T-11), Marc Leishman (T-8), and Bud Cauley (MC). While I did have 3 of my picks finish in the top 11, the missed cuts from Day and Cauley made it a disappointing week overall. We’ll try to bounce back by going 5/5 this week:
Gary Woodland: $19,828 – Woodland is an easy play for me this week thanks to his price tag under $20k. He has made 15 straight cuts and has the style of game to shoot some low rounds on this course. He is long off the tee and is ranked 19th in ball striking. His biggest issue this season has been his putter. He’s currently ranked 136th in strokes gained putting. While that may concern some, he’s one good putting week away from notching another win on tour. Woodland finished in a T-4th here in 2011 and has a good shot of being in contention come Sunday.
Brendon De Jonge: $19,285 – This week has the feeling of a breakthrough win for De Jonge. He comes into the event playing his best golf of the season. He’s made 8 straight cuts and has posted Top 30 finishes in 6 of his last 7 events. Not only is he in great form, but he also has event history on his side. De Jonge has 2 Top-5 finishes and another T-17th finish at this event. While it may feel a little strange paying $19k for De Jonge, this is the week to pay up for him.
Daniel Summerhays: $16,991 – Much like De Jonge, this could be a breakout week for Summerhays. He’s having a terrific season with 17 of 21 cuts made and 2 Top-10 finishes. Summerhays has posted Top-30 finishes in 4 of his last 6 events and also has event history on his side as he has finished inside the Top-10 in each of his last two trips to Greenbrier. The stats also support the Summerhays play this week as he is ranked 41st in ball striking and 16th in strokes gained putting.
Cameron Tringale: $14,567 – I’m excited about Tringale’s price and upside this week. He’s been a cut making machine this season and has been terrific at this event in the past. He’s made the cut here in each of the last 3 seasons and has posted T-23rd, T-56th, and T-4th place finishes. Tringale is ranked inside the top 100 in ball striking and strokes gained putting and he should be able to make the cut once again. Anything on top of that is just gravy.
Scott Brown: $8,762 – Brown is my super sleeper pick this week. I typically don’t like to target the cheap golfers in my lineups, but Brown was high in the projections and everything else lines up for him as well. Brown is ranked 66th in ball striking and 50th in strokes gained putting. He’s also made the cut in each of the last 2 years at the event. He will be a steal at $9k if he can make the cut.
Greenbrier Classic Projections – DraftStreet
The PGA projections are calculated using 3 weights this week: Average Odds to Win, Average Odds to Finish in the Top 10, and 2014 Cut Percentage. These 3 weights are used to create a Player Score that rates a golfer from 1-100 for that particular event. The player score is then used to come up with a projection based on the previous fantasy outputs of the same event in prior years.
