Wednesday’s NBA slate will conclude with a matchup between the Atlanta Hawks and Phoenix Suns at the Footprint Center. Entering play, Atlanta (25-26) owns the eighth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Phoenix (27-25) is tied for the fifth-best record in the Western Conference after winning six of their last 10 contests. Tonight, oddsmakers are expecting a tightly-contested affair between these two teams, pricing the Suns as 1-point home favorites on the spread.

Atlanta Hawks

Capela’s impact

Though the Hawks are only 4-4 in eight games since Clint Capela returned from injury, they have played significantly better basketball of late. In those eight contests, the Hawks only have one loss by more than seven points, and it came on the road against a Chicago Bulls team that had a major rest advantage.

Per Cleaning the Glass, the Hawks rank in the 67th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 35th percentile in defensive efficiency when Capela is on the floor this year, compared to the 35th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 45th percentile in defensive efficiency when he is on the sidelines. His presence is a major boon to this team.

Balanced offensive approach

Across Atlanta’s last eight games, they lead the NBA in offensive efficiency, scoring 124.7 points per 100 possessions. During that stretch, they have six players averaging at least 12.9 points, and eight players averaging at least 8.3 points.

Dejounte Murray has come alive of late, averaging 26.1 points on an efficient 53.8% from the floor since Capela’s return. The Hawks are one of the NBA’s most dangerous offenses when playing at full strength.

Phoenix Suns

Booker, Payne, Shamet OUT

Since Devin Booker last played a full game on December 17, the Suns are 9-13 overall and have been outscored by 2.4 points per 100 possessions. Still, they have been competitive at home in that span, with a 6-5 record and a +2.4 Net Rating.

In five games since Chris Paul returned to the floor, the Suns are 4-1, with their lone defeat coming by four points to the Dallas Mavericks. Included in their four wins are games against the Memphis Grizzlies, Charlotte Hornets, San Antonio Spurs, and Toronto Raptors.

Who will step up for Phoenix?

Per CourtIQ, when Booker, Cameron Payne, and Landry Shamet are each off of the floor at the same time this season, Deandre Ayton (+4.3%) sees the largest increase in usage of any player on Phoenix’s roster. In these situations, Ayton is averaging 22.8 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per 36 minutes of action. According to props.cash, Ayton has scored at least 18 points in each of his last five games with both Booker and Payne in street clothes. Expect him to be heavily involved in the offense again on Wednesday.

Hawks vs. Suns – Picks & Predictions

Since Clint Capela returned to the floor, the Hawks have been the league’s best offense, scoring 124.7 points per 100 possessions. Still, Atlanta ranks 27th in defensive efficiency in that span, allowing 123.0 points per 100 possessions. Both of these teams play at a pace near league average, and neither team is consistently committed to getting stops. It might be a little bit of a sweat, but the over is the smart play in this spot.

PICK: Over 231.5 (-110, Wynn)
