Well Game 5 is history and someone is on the brink of elimination. Things are getting tight now and 1 of these guys is starting to feel the pressure of their pockets being $5K lighter. Let’s take an early look at their rosters and how things played out now.
My Initial Thoughts on Both Lineups:
Editor’s Note: I am giving my initial thoughts on these lineups when the game is first released, without any knowledge of the outcome or any results
Pitching Similar make up to both pitching staffs. Ventura the ace followed by a solid #2 and cheap 3rd. Gray and Lynn are a wash IMO. Both have nice K potential. Gray has been more consistent but I like the Lynn matchup more. Bedard vs. Lyles is where this is won or lost. Both have been solid lately, but both are also very capable of getting shelled. Tommy is banking on the fact that Lyles is no fluke. He has been solid this year. I just wouldn’t want to roll him out in Cincinnati. Bedard is as blow up prone as anyone on the board so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Edge- Toss up
Hitting There’s elements to both lineups I like tonight. Favre rolling with Votto again. Also he is rostering Joyce against a RHP again. When you look closely at a guy’s roster several days in a row you pick up on certain players they like to play. Most of us are like this and we don’t even know it. We have these subtle biases towards some guys and we subconsciously play them too much. When these players struggle, then we struggle in our fantasy games. I think this lends credence to my theory of hot and cold within the fantasy world reflecting real life hot and cold streaks. Favre rolled a mini Boston stack against Perez. Perez has been all or nothing for the Rangers so this stack is all or nothing for Favre. I don’t like that philosophy in a cash game where it’s 2 out of 3 wins for $10K.
Tommy has no mini stacks of any kind. He did however run out Adam Jones again for the 4th game in a row I believe. The price is near $6,800 now so I suspect this is one of his favorite players also. I like his BvP plays with Howard and Beltran. He saw that Ryan Howard BvP vs. Gee and his eyes lit up. He also has the Cody Ross Paul Goldschmidt play vs. the LHP. I love using D-Backs against mediocre lefties. Solid move.
Edge- Tommy Gee
Overall I am installing Tommy G as a slight favorite tonight based on some consistency issues with Favre. I don’t think the Red Sox mini stack against that pitcher is a “consistent” winning play. Also Lyles has been more consistent this year than Bedard. So on paper I think Tommy has the advantage tonight.
Breaking Down Favre’s Lineup:
Anytime you get Lucroy against a LHP he is immediately a solid play. That played out tonight with a monster game. The Red Sox, in general, put up some nice run production on the board. However his mini stack only produced 6 points. Votto hit another dong and that makes 2 in a row for him. He may be getting hot and with the streaky nature of MLB it’s something to keep an eye on. Aramis popped a dong real quick and then left the game with injury. I don’t think he would have made a difference in the outcome of this game though.
Breaking Down Tommy G’s Lineup:
Jaso was a fine play for Tommy as he who the highest scoring player of the night for either team. Tommy has a distinct approach to building his teams. He has been very successful in baseball at what he does. One thing that he truly believes in is BvP. He builds teams around those numbers sometimes and tonight was one of those nights. And it paid off in spades. Huge nights out of the big BvP guys. There are plenty of guys out there who will completely disregard the stat but don’t do it. It has as much merit as any other stat out there. It’s another tool that should be used in team building and Tommy has made a DFBC appearance last year, has 2 more DFBC seats this year and is on the verge of taking down Favre in great part because of that stat.
How The Game Played Out:
The pitching was bizarre world in this game. The studs played like garbage and the salary savers were dominate with Bedard and Lyles leading the way. Pitching was basically a wash. It came down to offense and Tommy edge him out with big Jaso game to go along with the nice Ryan Howard performance. Tommy now takes a 3-2 lead and has Favre against the ropes. Should be interesting to see how Favre handles an elimination game on Sunday. Bold prediction from me is that we will see both guys roster an ace. Tommy will roster Adam Jones and 2 or 3 of the best BvP guy’s playing. Favre will get Votto in his lineup if the price isn’t too high and also Matt Joyce, if batting in the top half of the order.
