Well there is nothing like a good ole game 7 to get the juices flowing. It’s a good thing for Tommy that he gets to experience a game 7 in this match as it looks like his beloved Brooklyn Nets won’t be sniffing a game 7 vs. the Heat. This has been a back and forth series and it concluded last night with all $10K on the line in a winner take all 1 night game set. Let’s see how it played out.

My Initial Thoughts on Both Lineups:
Editor’s Note: I am giving my initial thoughts on these lineups when the game is first released, without any knowledge of the outcome or any results
Pitching Looking at the pitching staff for each of these I see we have a 2 pitcher overlap. It’s to be expected with the lack of choices. Lyons and Kuroda were affordable, so they were taken by both Tommy and Favre. Pitching comes down to Ramos vs. Floyd and for pure points I would favor Floyd SLIGHTLY. But when you factor in the salary, I think Ramos is going to be the better player. He should be able to score some points in a big park, he’s looked decent recently and he will allow Tommy to spend an extra $4K on hitters.
Hitting Throw out the Howie Kendrick and Allen Craig overlap (both players I liked a lot tonight) and we’re left with a 7 on 7. Running through the selections it goes something like this; Norris vs a LHP is superior to Laird, Albert v. Miggy is a wash to me. Beltre against Peacock is a better choice than Pablo. Hanley is a beast and I would prefer him over Lowrie tonight. The Trout/Gentry combo edges out Beltran/Holliday to me and finally I give the bod to Werth over Castro. So after all this I see Tommy being a favorite in the hitting category mainly because he has a few guys (Trout, Miggy and even Hanley) who can dominate a fantasy contest.
Overall I give Tommy the game 7 early advantage because he may get outscored by a few at pitching but any 1 of his big 4 hitters can put up a 15+ spot.
Breaking Down Favre’s Lineup:
I mentioned the pitching dilemma tonight earlier. Favre chose to spend the extra $4K and ride Gavin Floyd at SP. Not a bad selection at all. He was coming off a solid performance and the Giant bats can go quiet at times. No real mini stacks or trends to tell in his offense. He had much less than Tommy to spend on bats and it showed. His highest salaried player was Pujols. When comparing Favre to Tommy we can see that Tommy was able to afford Trout in addition to Miggy and Beltre vs. that lone Pujols. If you’re not losing that much on pitching then having those 3 sluggers vs. 1 hitter is a serious advantage to Tommy.
Breaking Down Tommy G’s Lineup:
I think the player pool and pricing on DS tonight forced every owner to make a decision; either take Felix and possibly a RP or roll with 3 mediocre SP’s to have any semblance of offense. Both guys took Kuroda and Lyons, so I won’t get into that except to say that Lyons was a solid play on paper that didn’t pan out. He has been looking better lately with some K potential recently and a cake matchup. Tommy’s 1 on 1 pitcher was Cesar Ramos. I have to say that going in I thought it was a fair decision. However he came out and got shelled. He was able to recoup and get back into positive points though.
Tommy’s offense was where he had the advantage and that played out. Beltre hit a homer, Trout put up a 5 spot and Miggy nailed 4 points. Outside of Beltre those numbers don’t sound too imposing, but if you get a solid 9 point game out of 1 guy then all you need is a handful of other batters to reach 4 or 5 points and you’re golden in cash games if you have any kind of pitching.
How The Game Played Out:
Well it wasn’t exactly the firework show we have been seeing, but it was a close game nonetheless. Floyd was able to beat out Ramos by 5 points. Those 5 points were not enough to offset the advantage at hitter Tommy was able to get. The difference in the game was Beltre’s home run. It was the only home run of the night for either team. How many points are you gaining with a big upgrade at Pitcher? That’s the question you have to ask yourself when making a team on Draftstreet. Tommy saw the value of the $4K he saved on Ramos as being a boon to his offense…and it was.
Well this thing concludes at 4-3 for the winner, The King of the North. He has defended the honor of those who fell along the wayside before him. Now that it is over I can speak freely and say that I am glad Tommy won. Not just cause he’s a Rotogrinders figure and Favre is not. It’s not just because I will get nightly texts from Tommy telling me he has a shot at winning a Qualifier tonight…after the 1st inning. It’s more because this was a battle of personalities. They are similar in that they both talk a lot and are outlandish. But Tommy is who he is and he is true to his real self. Favre is too contrived and fake for my taste. I don’t care who you are or what you do, just be real. Favre isn’t real. Tommy is. As much as Tommy G wants to play the a-Hole sometimes, he’s really a good person, and it’s nice to see the good guys finish first every once in a while.
