Tool Structure
We setup GridironIQ with the success of our PlateIQ solution in mind. We have player information located at left, and matchup/team information located at right. The sections are sub-divided as follows:
Player Level Statistics
Opportunity: Nothing is more paramount to understanding DFS potential than predicting player opportunity. We display all the stats you know and love including rushing share, targets share, high-value opportunities such as red zone, snaps, routes, air yards, and details on our stock player projections.
Efficiency: We dive deeper into how a player has performed at the efficiency level, and help you find context on their previous production. Some stats we love include clean pocket stats for QBs, target depth breakdowns for pass catchers, and the always useful yards per route run metric.
Production: We cover the basics here like yardage gained and passing TDs, but we’re not interested in overloading you with results-oriented information you can find anywhere (including our player game logs). Instead, we inform you on explosive plays produced, “expected” fantasy points vs. actual, rushing production by blocking scheme, and passing production by coverage type. It’s easy to get lost in the weeds on deeper stats like these, but there is always a small amount value located at the extremes. We’re giving you the chance to find it without too much time digging. We also show you some of our projected median stat lines for each player.
Team / Matchup Level Statistics
Overview: Basic Fantasy points allowed statistics organized in an easy to read fashion. We also compiled some key stats from Football Outsiders such as DVOA, so that you can quickly assess high-level matchups.
Identity: At the team level, we help you understand and compare identity metrics. Basic stats like run/pass ratio, success rates, plays per game, pace of play, yards per play, early-down and 3rd-down success, and percentage aligned with 3WRs+ / 2 TEs+ / and 2 RB formations. We line up the offense and defense side by side for easy, color-coded comparison.
Rush / Pass: We provide further context on run and pass identity with additional rate stats on their previous performances. Additional insights include pressure stats, expected points added, TD rates, explosive play rates, and play identity inside the 10-yard line. In the pass identity tab, we also show a matrix of targets by position as shown below.
Betting: We are currently displaying some basic information like lines, movement, and team totals. We also bring in data from our projections to compare with player prop lines from SharpSide. We rate each comparison and help you spot bets you might want to research further.
Helpful Tips for Using This Tool
Game Navigation Bar: Use the top-level scroll to select your game of choice, and dive into the matchups.
Tool Tips: Hover over the header for most stats, and you’ll find a description of each stat. Sometimes, we’ll explain the more advanced stats in deeper detail.
Focus on Opportunity First for DFS: The saying defense doesn’t matter is not totally false. While the reality is far from “doesn’t matter at all”, what this really means is that opportunity matters most. There are factors of a team’s defensive identity that do play a big role in how much opportunity your player could receive in DFS, but the key is that you understand the value opportunity. It is your clearest path to making smart decisions.
Real Football Success Requires Moving the Chains: You can’t know everything about a team even with all the stats we have in GridironIQ. That said, looking at success rate stats and matchups could lead to better prediction of game outcomes. Expected points added, early-down success rates, 3rd down success rates, and quarterback protection stats can offer clues on which teams to believe in for the upcoming week. Teams with efficient, well-protected QBs that pass on early downs will likely have a better chance to move the chains than low-efficiency grinders who constantly face third and long. Teams that move the chains and prevent their opponents from doing the same tend to win more games. You can locate matchup mismatches with relative ease using GridironIQ.
Look for the Highest Value Props: A rating closer to 50 means our projections are seeing things relatively similar to how the books see it. You’re going to want to see prop bet ratings at the high end before you start to get really excited about digging deeper. You can always trust your instinct, but just remember the sportsbooks are pretty good about setting these lines. Aim for the lowest hanging fruit.
Spend the Most Time Building Lineups: Stats and data can help inform your decisions, but the biggest part of your NFL week should be more about solving the lineup construction puzzle than obsessing over stats. We try to help you by cutting down on that time with GridironIQ, so don’t blow that savings by spending days at a time number crunching.
