Hit the Bench

A few weeks back, I dissected the options at each position to find who gave the best value for the money on Fantasy Sports Live. This week, I’m going to take the opposite approach and look at which players give you the least bang for the buck. It makes no sense to overspend on these players, when you can find more value elsewhere.
I’m calculating a player’s “value ratio” as fantasy point per game (ppg) / salary. I multiply that by 100 for readability.

Goalies

Selecting goalies is often based more on matchup each night than a player’s ppg or even salary; however, it’s worth noting which players tend to give you better value when deciding between a couple options. For comparison, the top value ratio right now is Dwayne Roloson (TB – $58) – 18.70 ppg —> for a value ratio of 32.24.

1. Johan Hedberg (NJ – $68) – 7.70 ppg —> 11.32
2. Ty Conklin (STL – $80) – 9.09 ppg —> 11.36
3. Mathieu Garon (COB – $100) – 12.26 ppg —> 12.26
4. Jonathan Bernier (LA – $76) – 9.33 ppg —> 12.28
5. Martin Brodeur (NJ – $50) – 6.44 ppg —> 12.88

As you can see, there’s a huge difference between the value you’re getting from these bottom feeders, versus the top options like Roloson (32.24), Rinne (25.88), and Hiller (23.21). So while it’s tempting to take that chance on a value pick like Brodeur or Conklin, in this case, it’s not paying off.

A few other surprisingly lower ratios worth noting:

Defense

On defense, your top value ratio comes from Ian White (CAR – $11) – 3.32 ppg —> 30.18. Some other notable high ratios: Tobias Enstrom (24.67), Alex Goligoski (23.74), and Shea Weber (23.68). While you’re getting 20+ with these top picks, watch out for the following players delivering much less:

1. Jeff Schultz (WAS – $15) – 1.91 ppg —> 12.73
2. Travis Hamonic (NYI – $18) – 2.38 ppg —> 13.22
3. Zbynek Michalek (PIT – $15) – 2.13 ppg —> 14.20
4. Tom Poti (WAS – $21) – 3.00 ppg —> 14.29
5. Brad Stuart (DET – $35) – 5.04 ppg —> 14.40

Other low numbers worth noting:

Center

patrice%20bergeron

The top performing center right now is Patrice Bergeron (BOS – $36) – 11.02 —> 30.61. His salary hasn’t yet caught up with his recent hot stretch. A more reasonable comparison for a top-end ratio is Mikhail Grabovski at 22.96. Here are centers giving you the least value for your investment today:

1. Mathieu Perreault (WAS – $53) – 7.94 ppg —> 14.98
2. Valtteri Filppula (DET – $45) – 7.09 ppg —> 15.76
3. Vincent Lecavalier (TB – $44) – 7.35 ppg —> 16.70
4. Rich Peverley (ATL – $39) – 6.82 ppg —> 17.48
5. David Krejci (BOS – $57) – 10 ppg —> 17.54

Some of these may come as a surprise. You may have thought you were getting good value with Krejci at $57. Here are a few other eye-openers to think twice about this week. The high ppg for these guys make them a tough call.

Left Wing

Sergei Kostitsyn (NAS – $25) – 7.00 ppg —> 28.00 is your top value at left wing.
Here’s the bottom 5:

1. Justin Abdelkader (DET – $45) – 6.28 ppg —> 13.96
2. Alex Tanguay (CGY – $44) – 7.53 ppg —> 17.11
3. Jeff Tambellini (VAN – $56) – 9.60 ppg —> 17.14
4. Pascal Dupuis (PIT – $41) – 7.06 ppg —> 17.22
5. Andrew Ladd (ATL – $50) – 8.64 ppg —> 17.28

Ladd is particularly surprising on this list, as he’s having a career season. Some others to be careful with:

Right Wing

Patric Hornqvist (NAS – $40) – 9.46 ppg —> 23.65 is giving the best value at right wing.
Compare that with these guys:

1. Todd Bertuzzi (DET – $58) – 7.41 ppg —> 12.76
2. Brandon Prust (NYR – $38) – 6.59 ppg —> 17.34
3. Sean Avery (NYR – $43) – 7.70 ppg —> 17.91
4. Brooks Laich (WAS – $48) – 8.65 ppg —> 18.02
5. Steve Downie (TB – $47) – 8.60 ppg —> 18.30

Clearly, Bertuzzi is due for a price correction, as he’s dried up in production and giving almost no value. Downie is a bit surprising as well. A few more on the low end:

My Roster: Friday, 01/14/2010

FSL – Standard 10-team – 575 point cap league

Position Player Salary Notes
Goalie Craig Anderson $78 Going with Anderson mostly due to the situation on the other end of the rink. Minnesota is likely down to their 3rd string goalie.
Center Steven Stamkos $83 Should light it up against the Devils poor defense.
Center Henrik Zetterberg $74 Forget the All-Star snub, Zetterberg is one of the top performers on offense this season. He’ll get some points against Columbus.
Left Wing Daniel Sedin $82 Worth every penny of his high pricetag. The Caps aren’t known for defense. Expect at least a goal from Daniel.
Left Wing Simon Gagne $10 Gagne finally broke through with a goal the other night. He’s capable of more and the Devils may give him room to score again. Can’t beat the price.
Right Wing Danny Briere $79 Briere is still one of the top values at forward. He contributes across the board in goals, assist, PIMs and +/-.
Right Wing Claude Giroux $49 Giroux remains a favorite at a reasonable price.
Defense Dustin Byfuglien $70 Adding Gagne gives me room to splurge on Byfuglien, who’s essentially an extra forward.
Defense Niklas Lidstrom $50 Rounded out my defense with the guy tied with Byfuglien in points.
