ESPN’s NBA double-header will conclude on Wednesday with a matchup between the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers. Entering play, Dallas (29-26) owns the sixth-best record in the Western Conference, one game behind Los Angeles (31-26) in the standings. Tonight, oddsmakers are expecting a comfortable win for the Clippers, pricing them as 8-point home favorites on the spread.

Dallas Mavericks

Doncic OUT

This evening, Luka Doncic will miss his third consecutive game with a right heel contusion. This past Saturday, Dallas lost 119-113 to Golden State on the road, but never led in the contest, and trailed by as many as 23 points in a non-competitive game script. The team responded well two nights later, defeating the Utah Jazz 124-111.

Per Cleaning the Glass Dallas, ranks in the 94th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 36th percentile in defensive efficiency with Doncic on the floor this season, compared to the 11th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 41st percentile in defensive efficiency with him off of the floor this year. However, those numbers should be taken with a grain of salt, considering the fact that the front office made a major trade earlier this week, overhauling much of the roster.

Irving makes his Dallas debut

On Monday, Dallas acquired Kyrie Irving and Markieff Morris from Brooklyn in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and three draft picks. According to Callie Caplan, Irving was the first player to arrive at the Mavericks’ practice yesterday in Los Angeles, and his public comments suggest genuine excitement at joining his new team.

Prior to being traded, Irving was averaging 30.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.9 assists across his previous 10 contests. He figures to immediately occupy a high-usage role in the offense with Doncic on the sidelines.

Los Angeles Clippers

Ascending in the West

Since January 20, Los Angeles is 8-2 overall and has climbed up to the fourth-best record in the Western Conference standings. In that span, they rank third in the NBA in Net Rating, having outscored their opponents by 8.1 points per 100 possessions.

The Clippers’ recent hot streak has been spearheaded by a seemingly reinvigorated Kawhi Leonard, who is averaging 28.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists across his last nine games. During that stretch, he is shooting an efficient 52.2% from the floor, including 45.8% from beyond-the-arc.

Life with Leonard

Leonard has played in only 31 games this season for the Clippers, but when he’s been on the floor, there is little doubt that this group is one of the most talented rosters in the league. When Leonard is in uniform, Los Angeles is 21-10, compared to a 10-16 record without him.

Per Cleaning the Glass, the Clippers rank in the 90th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 79th percentile in defensive efficiency this year with Leonard on the court, compared to the 11th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 47th percentile in defensive efficiency when he is on the sidelines.

Mavericks vs. Clippers – Picks & Predictions

Typically, Dallas struggles mightily to score the basketball when Luka Doncic is out of the lineup. However, the arrival of Kyrie Irving is likely to help the Mavericks improve their offensive efficiency significantly in these situations. Still, Dallas’ defense lacks talent, especially with Maxi Kleber still working his way back from a right hamstring tear. Across the last 30 days, the Clippers rank third in the NBA in offensive efficiency, scoring 119.9 points per 100 possessions. Expect both of these teams to have little trouble putting the ball in the basket on Wednesday – take the over.
