Memorial Tournament Weather Report and Forecast

PGA golfer Russell Henley

This week, we find ourselves in the middle of the Buckeye State for the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio. I have nothing to add about the city itself since I’ve never been there, but I can add quite a bit about the weather we’ll see, which at times will be very, very ugly.

As usual in my PGA weather forecasts, we’re focusing more on wind than rain. While rain can halt play if it’s heavy enough, it also helps soften and slow the course, which helps as much as it hurts.

With wind, there’s no helpful side; it’s all negative impact. And the impact can lead to dramatic differences in scoring. My goal is always to try to highlight the time frame with the lightest winds and the time frame with the strongest winds to see if there’s a cumulative advantage for one wave over another.

You can then use this to your advantage when making your picks on the best DFS sites.

Memorial Tournament Weather Forecast

Thursday, May 29th

Not a bad start. Winds 0-5 mph early on Thursday, steadily increasing to a manageable 10-mph wind in the afternoon. There’s a chance for a few showers, but the coverage is low, and we’re likely dry (or at least dry enough).

Friday, May 30th

This is when things get interesting…and likely get ugly. There is some model disagreement here, but my preferred forecast models have much of the morning as a total washout, with rain continuing through noon and into the afternoon as well. Things might dry up a bit later in the day, but there’s still some scattered showers and storms around. Winds will be sustained around 10 mph but with much longer gusts while the storm is around. Those winds, however, may be irrelevant since they come while it should be pouring (all of this is assuming the forecast is correct). I don’t think we see a ton of golf on Friday.

Saturday, May 31st

Pretty breezy, with winds peaking around 15 mph and gusts over 20 mph. Winds will be highest in the late morning and tapering off a bit later in the afternoon.

Sunday, June 1st

Pretty solid day to finish things out…lighter winds and no rain chances.

Memorial Tournament Weather Thoughts

With Friday having “near-complete washout” potential, it’s tough to try to pinpoint when these scheduled tee times will be in reality. I’m not against trying to just get slightly better weather Thursday morning and just seeing where the chips fall on Friday. Bottom line: low confidence on if/when golfers will tee off on Friday means it’s difficult to find a weather advantage you feel good about it.
