On Thursday evening, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors will battle at the Chase Center. Memphis enters play having won two of their first four games of the young season, but has suffered back-to-back losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers. Golden State is one of only two remaining unbeaten teams in the NBA. Oddsmakers anticipate the Warriors record will remain unblemished at the conclusion of tonight’s action, pricing Golden State as six point home favorites on the spread.
Let’s take a closer look at the matchup between the two teams and see where NBA bettors can find value at sportsbooks for this game on the West Coast.
Memphis Grizzlies (+6)
Memphis started the season on a high note with back-to-back wins against the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers. A missed free throw from Ja Morant at the end of regulation cost the Grizzlies a chance for a 3-0 start earlier this week against the Lakers. Last night, Portland ran Memphis off of the floor in the second half—outscoring the Grizzlies 65 to 39.
If there is any silver lining from the blowout, it is that Morant was the only player who totaled more than 25 minutes of action. Still, this is a group that could be in for a rough evening against the Warriors on Thursday on the backend of games on consecutive nights. Memphis ranks dead-last in defensive efficiency through four games. Having run up and down the floor yesterday against an athletic Portland team is not going to help matters on the defensive side of the ball this evening.
Morant has been fantastic to start the new campaign, averaging 30.5 points and 8.5 assists. If he can get some offensive assistance from Desmond Bane, De’Anthony Melton, and Jaren Jackson Jr. in this one, it will go a long way in helping the Grizzlies avoid their second embarrassing loss in as many nights.
Golden State Warriors (-6)
Are the Warriors back? They are off to their first 4-0 start since they opened the 2015-2016 campaign with 24 consecutive victories. Golden State has already proven that they can win on the road this year, beating the Lakers, Sacramento Kings, and the Oklahoma City Thunder away from the Chase Center. They have also shown that they can emerge victorious, even when they do not play their best game, as was the case against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Stephen Curry appears to be making another run at the Most Valuable Player award, averaging 29.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists through four games. Golden State still lacks a bonafide second-option on offense, but they have seen consistently solid production out of Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, and Damion Lee—all of whom are averaging between 14.3 points and 16.8 points per game. Draymond Green continues to be the engine that makes this team go, filling up the stat sheet across the board in the process with 9.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 1.3 steals.
Golden State enters Thursday’s action with the sixth-best offensive efficiency and the 13th ranked defensive efficiency in the NBA. This is a team that has been winning basketball games, despite not playing their best. The Warriors are rested and poised to improve on those season-long metrics tonight.
Grizzlies vs. Warriors Picks
Golden State has not played since Tuesday. Memphis was in Portland last night and had to travel to the Bay Area for the latter half of their back-to-back. Memphis did not land in San Francisco until nearly 1:00 am PT this morning. Bettors should put their faith in Golden State’s rested legs and superior talent to deliver a win against the spread in this contest.
If looking for a play on the total in this game, the under still has a small amount of value at the current market price of 229. This line opened far too high yesterday evening at 233, and was subsequently bet down by sharp action in the opening hours on the market. I have this game priced at 228. If looking for a same game parlay, bettors can pair the Warriors on the moneyline with the under 236.5 on Fanduel for -110 odds at the time of this writing.
