Thursday, May 17th

We’ve got an ace-less nine game slate on tap tonight. At first glance, things are very evenly spread out with no immediately obvious plays for either pitchers or hitters. This should leave us with a night where ownership is not a big issue, but let’s dig in and see if that opinion changes.

THURSDAY NIGHT PITCHING

There is not a single sure thing on the mound tonight, but a plethora of options with similar skills.

TWO GOOD LEFTIES WITH PLUS MATCHUPS

Tyler Skaggs vs Tampa – Outside of one bad start against the Red Sox, Skaggs has been consistently good this season. He has not allowed more than two runs in any of his other seven starts and has at least seven strikeouts in three straight and a 25% strikeout rate for the year that ranks 3rd on this slate. He has also brought his ground balls up to 52% while maintain strong control with a 7.1% walk rate.

I would lean JD over Blackmon. Such a huge ballpark edge there and both great hitters.

I’m completely fine with Boyd on this slate. He has very low strikeout upside, he’s just an 18-19% K guy, and even without Cano and Cruz this is still no a high strikeout opponent. But, he doesn’t walk a lot of guys, and he gets a ton of fly balls, which gives him the chance for some easy innings if HR/FB is in his favor. He missed my cut, but not by much and I certainly wouldn’t try to talk you out of him.

    Thoughts on Padres left-handed bats?

Yeah, they are tournament viable. Kuhl does give up hard hit fly balls to lefties. Franchy Cordero is probably my favorite guy there. They are pretty far down my list, but you can always look for a lefty homer against Kuhl.

Because of the fact that basically all these pitchers are risky tonight, I wouldn’t go so far as to call it crazy. But, man, the numbers just look so awful, that it’s really kind of blind hope that he somehow puts it back together. He’s a talented dude, and we saw it’s still in there, when he had that strong outing against Boston a few weeks ago, but 32 strikeouts to 25 walks in 46 innings is just awful, so it’s an easy pass for me personally.
