Thursday, September 27th

Well, happy Thursday folks. We’ve got an ugly six-game slate with only one good pitcher, and that one good pitcher has some serious weather concerns in his game. The offenses are just barely more exciting, with several of the worst teams in the league goofing around in bad ballparks. On top of all that, we’re quite likely to see some watered down lineups and pitchers pulled early. I’ll touch on all the games, and give you my thoughts, but there’s just not much to see here.

THURSDAY NIGHT PITCHING

ONE ACE IN THE RAIN

Gerrit Cole at Orioles – Cole is light years ahead of any other pitcher on this slate in talent and salary. It’s so bad, that his 35.1% K rate is a ridiculous 13% ahead of the next closest pitcher on this slate. On top of that he has a friendly matchup with a bad Baltimore team that strikes out a lot. Houston may decide to be moderately careful with his pitch count, but he will have his full usual rest before he is needed in the playoffs, so even that shouldn’t be a big concern. He’s always some threat to spend too many pitches getting through an innings, which has left him in the 5-6 inning range in six of his last seven starts, but even in those games, the strikeouts just keep coming. He is coming off a start with 12-K in seven innings, and he has at least 8+ strikeouts in 11 of his last 13 games. If this game ends up being OK with the weather, there is no chance I would consider fading him in cash games. In tournaments, he has not only the highest floor but also the highest ceiling, and on a night without a lot of must-spends on offense, I would want to be as far above the field as possible on Cole.
