Happy Saturday, Grinders! As usual, we have a split slate Saturday on tap. Today is split almost evenly down the middle in terms of day games compared to night games. DraftKings is offering a 7-game early slate that starts around 2 PM Eastern. FanDuel has split up the early games into a couple of small slates. For today’s article, I will focus the early slate analysis on the DraftKings slate. I will also then break down the night slate that starts around 6:30 PM Eastern. That is a 6-game docket, while FanDuel is leaving off the solo late night DET/LAA game to make it a 5-game slate over there.

We definitely need to keep an eye on the weather today, as several games have potential issues. Be sure to keep tabs on any updates by using our MLB weather page to make sure you are up to date before lock. I am going to write this article assuming every game plays for now, as Roth does not have any of the games with a “RED” designation. As of the time I am writing this, the worst rating is a straight “ORANGE” for the Mets/Cardinals game in St. Louis.

Let’s dig in and see what this first weekend of May has in store!

Brown of the Astros

A SOLO ACE AT THE TOP

Hunter Brown vs. White Sox

Even when Hunter Brown got off to a horrific start in 2024, he didn’t have the worst underlying metrics. He was simply a victim of horrid batted ball luck at the start of last season, and then he spent the rest of the year trying to dig out of that early hole. Despite having an ERA close to 10 a month into the season, he still finished the 2024 campaign with a 3.49 ERA and a strikeout rate north of 25%. Imagine what those numbers would have looked like if not for that poor start to the year!

He has now started the 2025 campaign on a much more positive note. Through his first 6 starts, he has a 1.22 ERA and a 2.54 xFIP. His walks are down. His strikeout rate is all the way up to 29.9%. His swinging-strike rate is about 2% higher than last year. Essentially, he has become Houston’s ace, whether he has that designation officially or not.

Oh, and Hunter Brown is facing the White Sox as a massive road favorite on a day where there is not a lot to love for pitching options. The White Sox have an implied team total of just 3 runs.

Don’t overthink this. Hunter Brown is the SP1 on the afternoon slate, and it’s not particularly close. The numbers and the matchup are simply outstanding.
