Million Dollar Musings: MLB DFS Picks Today for Wednesday 9/17
Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Dave Potts (aka CheeseIsGood) has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his MLB DFS picks. Cheese, one of the preeminent baseball minds in all of fantasy sports and a winner of a $1,000,000 1st-place prize on both DraftKings and FanDuel, is here to give you his musings on the upcoming MLB DFS slate.
Happy Wednesday! We have a split-slate day, with an early 5-game slate on DK that starts at 12:35 PM ET and then a slight difference in the main slates between the sites. DK is running an 8-game slate at the usual 7:05 PM ET, while FD is starting earlier at 6:40 PM ET to add a couple more games.
There are a bunch of games with some Yellow on our MLB weather page, but for now, it looks like we can count on being able to play everything.
I’ll start with a quick peek at the early DK slate and then be back a little later with analysis on the evening slates. You can also check out our MLB DFS optimizer, LineupHQ, for Expert tags and analysis for both DraftKings and FanDuel.

Wednesday Early Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on DraftKings
We have 4 pitchers priced above $8,000 on DK, and while none of them are great, they are all OK, and all have good matchups:
TOP TIER PITCHING
- Matthew Boyd at Pirates – 21.5% K, 5.7% BB, 3.05 ERA, 4.06 SIERA
- Tyler Wells at White Sox – 3rd start of season
- Hurston Waldrep at Nationals – 22.8% K, 9.8% BB, 2.78 ERA, 4.19 SIERA
- Brady Singer at Cardinals – 22.8% K, 8.7% BB, 3.94 ERA, 4.20 SIERA
All four of these guys are something close to average pitchers, but these are all above-average matchups that make them look much better.
Matthew Boyd has stopped striking people out in his last few starts, but he still has good real-life numbers and can fly through easy innings when he’s not allowing home runs. The Pirates lineup has a couple decent righties, but it is mostly a mixture of high-strikeout bats with low-power bats. On this underwhelming pitching slate, he looks like the SP1 to me.
Tyler Wells has looked good in his first 2 starts, with a 10:1 K:BB ratio in 11.2 innings. This looks similar to his 2023 season when he had a 24.69% K rate with 7.2% walks. He’s an extreme fly-ball pitcher, which ends up making him look a lot like Matthew Boyd, maybe with a tad more strikeout ceiling. For me, I would so much rather have my pitcher facing the Pirates that I’m going with Boyd over Wells, but Wells is certainly playable as well.
