MLB DFS Top Stacks: Thursday, May 25
Justin Carlucci walks you through the top stacks for the upcoming MLB main slate. Should we eat the chalk? Which team is a good pivot? Where can we find leverage? Find out below!
MLB DFS is complex. Most articles on MLB DFS picks are about the individual players most likely to succeed on any given day, but the MLB DFS picks most likely to succeed aren’t always the MLB DFS picks we should be most likely to play.
In this space, we will look at the MLB DFS process over the MLB DFS picks. And we’re looking at teams over individual players, using the features of the RotoGrinders Top Stacks tool. We’ll still look at the player projections available in LineupHQ. Still, we’ll be more focused on collective ownership, optimal scores, and matchups of full stacks within the context of game selection and leverage.
There is baseball throughout the entire day on Thursday. FanDuel’s slate starts at 6:40 ET with a bout between the Royals and White Sox, while the DraftKings slate will kick off at 7:05 ET. There are plenty of bad pitchers on the mound today, let’s dive in to find out what teams we’re stacking up.
Chalk Stack – Phillies vs. Dylan Dodd, Orioles vs. Clarke Schmidt
It’s been tough sledding for Dylan Dodd in the bigs. So far, he checks every box you want as a pitcher to stack against. He’s striking out nobody (10%), walking nobody (5%) and he’s yielding a pretty high fly-ball rate. Dodd was pretty good in his first MLB start, across his next two appearances, he gave up 10 runs, 18 hits, and EIGHT barrels. Most of these Phillies aren’t cheap, but Alec Bohm’s price is really lagging at $3,300 on DraftKings. According to our tool, the Phillies currently have the best chance to be optimal at the second-highest ownership.
It’s Baltimore that is projected to be the chalkiest stack on DraftKings, but does indeed have the second-highest shot at being optimal.
I was high on Clarke Schmidt entering 2023. There’s still a chance he turns it around, as he owns a respectable 4.12 xFIP. However, he has REALLY struggled against left-handed hitters this year and Baltimore could throw at least six at him today. Schmidt is giving free passes to 10% of lefties, while yielding a massive .287 ISO and 40% hard-hit rate against them. I love the top-three Orioles in this lineup, but I’d also have plenty of Gunnar Henderson in my Orioles builds today. Henderson has a team-leading .240 ISO against right-handed pitchers this season.
