PLAYOFF BASEBALL!!!! We’re going to get at least a few days of decent sized slates this week and next, with as many as eight games on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, and 4 on most weekdays the first two weeks. As per your request (yes, you! Your request!) I’m going to have an article to talk through some thoughts for these first couple weeks of playoff slates. This is not going to be quite the same as the regular season Musings, where I walk through every game and all the stats of this matchup and that matchup. There will be a little of that, but we’re mostly just going to look at the big picture view of these slates and some different strategies you can consider in tournaments.
We will have a few standout plays, but at this point in the year, everyone knows who is good, and with not as many games to weed through, it’s not going to be as difficult to pick out the top plays on any slate. Let’s just go ahead and get into this and see what happens.
Wild Card Round One – Tuesday, September 29th
Astros at Twins – Zack Greinke at Kenta Maeda
White Sox at A’s – Lucas Giolito at Jesus Luzardo
Blue Jays at Rays – Matt Shoemaker (and Toronto Bullpen) at Blake Snell
Yankees at Indians – Gerrit Cole at Shane Bieber
DK Pitching
Salary barely registers as a factor on this slate. Sure, $7,300 Zack Greinke gets you a couple more bats than $9,000 Shane Bieber, but this slate has clearly been priced with the intention that you can play whatever pitchers you want. When we sort these eight pitchers based on 2020 skill sets, it’s basically three tiers.
Shane Bieber is Tier One, all by himself with a 41.1% K rate and 7.1% walks.
Gerrit Cole, Lucas Giolito, Kenta Maeda and Blake Snell are Tier Two, all between 31-33.7% K, and all with the per inning upside to be top of the slate pitchers.
Zack Greinke, Jesus Luzardo and Matt Shoemaker are Tier Three, settling in between 22.6%-26.2% K.
While that bottom tier are lowest upside pitchers on this slate, keep in mind that these would be aces worthy of much higher price tags on a normal regular season slate.
