How do you plan to beat the field of opponents? What tactic or strategy will set you apart?

CheeseIsGood: The chalk is going to be very pronounced today with Coors Field bats being way ahead of the field, along with very obvious top pitchers in Framber Valdez and Dylan Cease. For starters, I’m going to side with Colorado ahead of St. Louis for the ‘good chalk’, but I am willing to under the field on this game overall. The White Sox are my primary pivot, and I love the value bats for the Marlins as well.

eys819: This is a pretty straightforward slate as far as “optimal” plays are concerned. We have two obvious pitchers, and the Cardinals are the obvious best stack for the third day in a row. It is really hard to argue for fading any of the three, but we have to find a way to be different somewhere. Gibson, Plesac, and Cabrera are my favorite pivots at SP, with HOU and CLE my first look for bats outside of Coors.

gneiffer07: While I think that Fading Coors might be the best way to differentiate, it’s not something I’m ready to fully do. Instead, I plan on double stacking Coors with the Marlins power guys quite a bit. Both Leblanc and Bleday are cheap and have a surprising amount of power that they haven’t fully shown in the majors. This allows me to pay up for nearly any bat or pitcher I need on this slate.

MrTuttle: Get a little different at SP2 in chalk STL stacks. Cabrera is easily my favorite option here but also think Brubaker is playable.

Who is your top overall pitcher (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

CheeseIsGood: Framber Valdez – There’s just no way to argue with 18 straight quality starts. That is such a remarkable streak of consistency, and it’s very useful on a slate that has only one real upside pitcher. That upside pitcher is Dylan Cease, but there are concerns here with his control and the matchup is not as good it might first appear. If I have the salary to just play Valdez/Cease that’s where I’ll go, and I’d rather overthink it on the offensive side.

eys819: Framber Valdez – This is razor thin between Valdez and Cease. Valdez offers a slight discount and more safety due to his elite groundball ability. You can argue Cease has more upside due to his higher strikeout rate, but also more risk due to his 10% walk rate. Ultimately, I think Valdez has a slightly better matchup due to the big strikeout rates at the bottom of the Texas lineup.

gneiffer07: Framber Valdez – It’s close between both Framber and Cease today, and while Cease likely gives you more upside, it’s a good spot for Vladez and the safety is there with Valdez. The bottom of this Texas lineup is jsut bad and is absolutely loaded with Ks. I think a CGSO is possible for Valdez here if he can make it out clean against the top of the lineup.

MrTuttle: Dylan Cease – There isn’t much in the way of strikeout upside on this slate. Cease easily has the highest strikeout rate (32.8%) on the season while Edward Cabrera is next in line (26.7%) in a more limited sample. After that, it drops down to JT Brubaker at 22.6% and Framber Valdez at 21.7%. Current projections have Cease and Valdez as the two top options on the slate but Cease provides substantially more upside which makes him my SP1.

Who is your top overall hitter (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

CheeseIsGood: JJ Bleday – I am going to take ownership into account when naming my top hitter today, and I just can’t say that Nolan Gorman is the best play on the slate when accounting for Mile High ownership. It’s very easy to identify great spend-ups today, and I would much rather just play the obvious spend-ups and then start fishing for value. Kyle Gibson has been absurdly lucky recently to go along with a drop to a terrible 13.4% K rate over the past month. He’s at just 14.2% K for the season against lefties, and JJ Bleday has already shown that his power is going to carry over to the major league level.

eys819: Nolan Gorman – Wonderful Cardinals chalk for the third day in a row. You could pick a number of different Cards bats for this spot, but Gorman should hit near the top of the order, and he offers significant savings from Goldy and Arenado. It is Gorman ahead of Carlson and O’Neill for me because of his eligibility at one of the weakest positions on the slate.

gneiffer07: Nolan Gorman – It’s Coors and Gorman is good and just too cheap. Gorman’s biggest fault is that he strikes out a lot, but Marquez struggles vs lefties this season and really has no strikeout ability vs them this year. Groman has massive flyball ability vs righties this season and this is a perfect spot for a bomb.

MrTuttle: Nolan Gorman – The Cardinals are still in Coors and once again the top overall offense on the slate. German Marquez has been bad in general this season but has struggled substantially more against LHB’s throughout his career. Gorman should be back up to hitting second in the order with a RHP on the mound and he provides plenty of power for relatively cheap at a weak position.

What is your hot take of the day?

CheeseIsGood: The Marlins outscore both the Cardinals and Rockies.

eys819: Kyle Gibson strikes out nine in seven shutout innings.

gneiffer07: The Marlins get 4 HRs today including one from both Leblanc and Bleday.

MrTuttle: Edward Cabrera is a top two scoring pitcher.
