MLB Grind Down: Friday, May 1st

The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time. Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing!

Wily Peralta (FD: $6600, DK: $6500)

Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 4.54 — Strikeout Rate: 11.0% — Walk Rate: 5.5% — Ground Ball Rate: 48.3%
2014: xFIP: 3.64 — Strikeout Rate: 18.4% — Walk Rate: 7.3% — Ground Ball Rate: 53.6%

Chicago Cubs vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.306 (Rank: 15)
Strikeout Rate: 23.1% (Rank: 28)

Analysis: Peralta is a pitcher that throws hard, but he has yet to turn that into an elite strikeout rate. He struck out 18.4% of the batters that he faced last season and that number is down to 11% this season. He is off to a rocky start this season with a 4.54 xFIP and a lower ground ball rate than we have seen from him in years past. He’s one of the biggest underdogs on the board today, as he takes on the Cubs in Chicago. If you are targeting a pitcher in the early game, Jon Lester is the better play of the two.

Pitcher Rating:57.6

Jon Lester (FD: $8700, DK: $9200)

Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 2.39 — Strikeout Rate: 25.0% — Walk Rate: 5.2% — Ground Ball Rate: 41.8%
2014: xFIP: 3.10 — Strikeout Rate: 24.9% — Walk Rate: 5.4% — Ground Ball Rate: 42.4%

Milwaukee Brewers vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.222 (Rank: 30)
Strikeout Rate: 26.9% (Rank: 28)

Analysis: Lester had another rocky start in his last outing, but once again, his indicators all look good. His numbers are nearly identical to what they were last season and he currently has an xFIP of 2.39, a high strikeout rate of 25%, and a low walk rate of 5.2%. The big fantasy outing that we have all been waiting for should come today against the Brewers, who are ranked dead last in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season. Lester also sees a small strikeout boost in this matchup, as the Brewers strike out at the third-highest rate against right-handed pitching.

Analysis: Peralta has the handedness splits and the BvP in his favor today. Wily Peralta is coming off of a 2014 season where he gave up a .361 wOBA to batters from the left side of the plate. Meanwhile, Rizzo has posted a .390+ wOBA against right-handed pitching in each of the last two seasons. Baltimore Orioles vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.363 (Rank: 2)
Strikeout Rate: 22.9% (Rank: 27)

Analysis: This game was scheduled to be played at Camden Yards, but with everything that is going on in Baltimore, they have moved it to Tropicana Field in Tampa. Colome has missed the start of the season with a case of pneumonia, but he’s been cleared to pitch tonight. He looked sharp in his rehab start, but he only threw 63 pitches so it’s possible that he could be on a pitch count in his first start of the season. Colome will be an interesting play moving forward, but there is too much risk surrounding his first start against the Orioles, who are ranked second in wOBA against right-handed pitching.

Pitcher Rating:51.7

Chris Tillman (FD: $7200, DK: $6100)

Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 5.62 — Strikeout Rate: 14.8% — Walk Rate: 14.8% — Ground Ball Rate: 36.1%

Tampa Bay Rays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.307 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 22.0% (Rank: 19)

Analysis: Tillman has really struggled in his first few starts of the season. He currently owns a 5.62 xFIP with a walk rate (14.8%) that is identical to his strikeout rate (14.8%). He draws a mediocre matchup against the Rays, who are ranked 13th in wOBA against right-handed pitching. Tillman doesn’t provide enough strikeout potential to overcome the fact that he is a small underdog tonight in a game that features a total of 8.0 runs.

Analysis: I must be feeling ill, as both of my first two batter recommendations are going to feature BvP. Longoria has had great success off of Chris Tillman in his career, going 14-for-36 with 6 home runs and 2 doubles. Longoria has also been swinging a hot bat with 14 hits in his last eight games.

Boston Red Sox vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.313 (Rank: 15)
Strikeout Rate: 21.5% (Rank: 20)

Analysis: Sabathia hasn’t been terrible this season, with a 3.35 xFIP and a strikeout rate of 20.6%. The most impressive statistic thus far has been his walk rate. He has only walked 3.7% of the batters that he has faced this season. Sabathia is not a recommended cash game play, but he’s an intriguing tournament option against a Red Sox offense that is ranked 15th in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season.

New York Yankees vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.305 (Rank: 16)
Strikeout Rate: 22.0% (Rank: 19)

Analysis: When you roster Masterson, it’s an experience unlike any other. Right from the first pitch, you have to buckle up and hold on for dear life. Masterson is one of the most inconsistent pitchers in baseball, as he can lose his command at any point. He has decent strikeout potential, but he walks too many batters for my liking. If I’m taking a chance on either pitcher in this rivalry, it’s going to be on CC Sabathia.

Analysis: Ellsbury hasn’t had great success against Masterson in his career, but I’m not overly concerned about it, as the sample size is only 18 at-bats. I like Ellsbury tonight because he provides great speed at the top of the order and Masterson walks a ton of batters. If Ellsbury can reach safely, he will be aggressive on the base pads. He already has eight stolen bases this season, five of which have come in the last four games.

Sabathia gave up a .401 wOBA to right-handed hitters last season and he’s given up a .375 wOBA this season. Meanwhile, Ramirez is boasting a cool .730 wOBA with an ISO of .800 against left-handed pitching. Cleveland Indians vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.282 (Rank: 23)
Strikeout Rate: 18.4% (Rank: 9)

Analysis: Anytime you see a pitcher with a strikeout rate under 10%, that should be a glaring red flag. In daily fantasy baseball, we need pitchers that can rack up the strikeouts. Pitchers with low strikeout potential need to have near perfect outings in order to reach value. Even though the Indians struggle against left-handed pitching, Buehrle can safely be avoided in all league formats.

Pitcher Rating:49.8

Carlos Carrasco (FD: $8700, DK: $7900)

Pitching Stats:
2015: xFIP: 1.60 — Strikeout Rate: 34.3% — Walk Rate: 4.5% — Ground Ball Rate: 59.0%

Toronto Blue Jays vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 9)
Strikeout Rate: 22.1% (Rank: 21)

Analysis: We go from one end of the strikeout spectrum to the other. Carrasco has one of the highest strikeout rates in all of baseball. He struck out 26.5% of the batters that he faced in 2014 and that number is all the way up to 34.3% in 2015. He also has an impressive 1.60 xFIP with a low walk rate of only 4.5%. Basically, Carrasco has been dominant this season. The Blue Jays hit right-handed pitching well as a team, but the strikeout potential and the discounted price outweighs the tough matchup.

Analysis: Koehler is one of the better value plays at the pitching position tonight. In fact, he’s about as cheap as I would go when looking at the different options on the mound. He has struggled to start the 2015 season, but he had a respectable strikeout rate of 19.1% last season. He draws a fantastic matchup against the Phillies, who are ranked 29th in wOBA against right-handed pitching.
