MLB Grind Down: Friday, May 22nd
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Noah Syndergaard (FD: $7700, DK: $7500)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 11 — SIERA: 4.30 — K Rate: 22.5% — K/9: 8.74 — BB Rate: 10.2% — FB Rate: 48.4% — HR/FB: 6.7%
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.295 (Rank: 23)
Strikeout Rate: 19.8% (Rank: 13)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.81 (Rank: 14)
Analysis: The Mets’ top pitching prospect has been fun to watch in his first two starts. He has pitched well outside of the 6th inning, where he has had some trouble in both of his outings. He has electric stuff with a fastball that tops out at around 97-98 MPH. He has ten strikeouts in his first two starts and he provides good upside at his price point. Run support could be an issue tonight though, as the Mets face Gerrit Cole in PNC Park. Syndergaard is best suited as a GPP play.
Pitcher Rating:58.6
Gerrit Cole (FD: $9400, DK: $9200)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 48 — SIERA: 2.81 — K Rate: 26.6% — K/9: 9.80 — BB Rate: 6.5% — FB Rate: 23.1% — HR/FB: 6.7%

New York Mets vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.280 (Rank: 28)
Strikeout Rate: 19.6% (Rank: 12)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.82 (Rank: 13)
Analysis: Cole has been dominant this season with a 2.81 SIERA and a K/9 of 9.8. He has struck out 26.6% of the batters that he has faced, while only walking 6.5%. He has good splits at home throughout his career and he draws one of the best pitching matchups on the schedule. The Mets are ranked 28th in wOBA (.280) and 12th in strikeout rate (19.6%) against right-handed pitching this season. Cole is one of the many aces that are in play tonight.

Analysis: McCutchen hasn’t gotten off to a great start this season, but again, his low BABIP is unsustainable and we should see some positive regression. We are starting to see that already, as McCutchen has nine hits and eight RBIs over his last eight games. He draws a decent matchup against the rookie Noah Syndergaard, who is still largely unproven at the major league level.

wOBA: 0.327 (Rank: 4)
Strikeout Rate: 21.0% (Rank: 21)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.79 (Rank: 17)
Analysis: O’Sullivan is one of the worst pitching options to take the mound tonight. On the season, he owns a 4.44 SIERA with a low K/9 of 5.3. His strikeout to walk ratio isn’t great and he comes in as the largest underdog on the board. He can safely be avoided in all league formats.
Pitcher Rating:28.4
Max Scherzer (FD: $11700, DK: $12700)
Pitching Stats:

wOBA: 0.277 (Rank: 29)
Strikeout Rate: 18.9% (Rank: 7)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.66 (Rank: 28)
Analysis: Scherzer has an almost perfect pitcher rating of 99.5 for tonight’s game against the Phillies. He has been dominant this season with a 2.60 SIERA and a K/9 of 10.5. He has seven times more strikeouts than walks this season. He’s pitching at home in Nationals Park and he draws a favorable matchup against a Phillies’ offense that is ranked 29th in wOBA (.277) against right-handed pitching this season. The Phillies are also ranked 28th in pitches per plate appearance. A complete game from Scherzer is not out of the question tonight.

Analysis: In the month of May, Harper is batting .393 with a .600 wOBA. He has 22 extra base hits, 18 runs, and 15 RBIs during that stretch. His wOBA against right-handed pitching is up to .528 on the season and he may have the best matchup of any left-handed hitter available tonight. wOBA: 0.311 (Rank: 15)
Strikeout Rate: 19.8% (Rank: 13)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.93 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Lewis has pitched better than anyone outside of Texas could have expected. On the season, he owns a 4.00 SIERA with a respectable K/9 of 7.4. He gives up a lot of fly balls though and if his HR/FB (4.4%) rate regresses toward his career average (10.9%), he could be in trouble moving forward. He’ll eventually start giving up more home runs and that very well could start tonight in the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium.
Pitcher Rating:48.1
Michael Pineda (FD: $9500, DK: $9400)

Texas Rangers vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.293 (Rank: 26)
Strikeout Rate: 21.0% (Rank: 21)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.82 (Rank: 11)
Analysis: Pineda has been terrific this season, posting a 2.41 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.6. As crazy as it sounds, he is on a short list of Cy Young contenders here in the early part of the season. He doesn’t walk batters, yet he has still managed to have a strikeout rate of 26.2%. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Rangers, who are ranked 26th in wOBA (.293) and 21st in strikeout rate (21.0%) against right-handed pitching this season. With all of the other aces on the mound tonight, Pineda will likely have a very low ownership level, making him a very strong tournament play.

On the season, he has a .356 wOBA and a .120 ISO against right-handed pitching. wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 10)
Strikeout Rate: 20.8% (Rank: 18)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.80 (Rank: 15)
Analysis: King Felix would typically be in play against the Blue Jays, but with so many other aces on the mound, he’s not really on my radar tonight as a cash game play. There are pitchers with better matchups and pitchers that are playing in better ballparks. Hernandez has a 2.69 SIERA on the season with a K/9 of 9.1. He draws a difficult matchup against the Blue Jays though, as they hit right-handed pitching well and the Rogers Centre is one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball.
Pitcher Rating:81.7
Marco Estrada (FD: $6700, DK: $5400)

wOBA: 0.300 (Rank: 20)
Strikeout Rate: 21.6% (Rank: 25)

Analysis: Estrada is not a recommended fantasy option tonight against the Mariners. Even though Seattle has struggled to score runs against right-handed pitching, Estrada has to face them in one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball. Estrada gives up a lot of walks and a high fly-ball rate. That’s not a great combination for a pitcher in daily fantasy baseball. He can safely be avoided in all league formats.

Analysis: Seager was thrown out of yesterday’s game for arguing a called third strike, but he’ll be back in the lineup tonight. He is riding a seven-game hitting streak and he gets to play in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre. He also draws a favorable matchup against Marco Estrada, who has given up a .315+ wOBA to hitters from both sides of the plate. The Mariners are a sneaky offense to stack tonight in tournaments.

wOBA: 0.329 (Rank: 3)
Strikeout Rate: 19.1% (Rank: 9)

Analysis: McHugh is not a household name, but he is establishing himself as one of the better pitchers in the American League. He has followed up an impressive rookie season with a 3.39 SIERA and a K/9 of 8.0 here in 2014. He keeps his walks down and he produces a decent number of ground ball outs. Unfortunately, he has to face the Tigers in Comerica Park tonight. The Tigers are ranked ninth or better in wOBA, strikeout rate, and pitches per plate appearance against right-handed pitching this season.

wOBA: 0.316 (Rank: 11)

Analysis: Simon may have an ERA of 3.04, but that doesn’t tell the entire story. He has a 4.43 SIERA on the season with a low K/9 of 5.9. His indicators don’t look great and his limited strikeout potential hurts his fantasy appeal. He’s a small favorite tonight against the Astros at home, but he’s not a pitcher that is on my radar in cash games or tournaments.
