MLB Grind Down: Friday, May 8th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Michael Wacha (FD: $8200, DK: $8300)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.27 — K Rate: 13.4% — K/9: 4.96 — BB Rate: 6.0% — GB Rate: 54.0%
2014: SIERA: 3.74 — K Rate: 21.0% — K/9: 7.91 — BB Rate: 7.4% — GB Rate: 41.6%
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.280 (Rank: 27)
Strikeout Rate: 20.3% (Rank: 17)
Analysis: Wacha hasn’t had the same success as last year, posting a 4.27 SIERA and a K/9 of 5.0 through his first five starts. The strikeouts will eventually come, but it’s something to keep an eye on here in the early part of the season. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Pirates, who are ranked 27th in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. He is a small underdog here, which takes him out of cash game consideration, but he makes an intriguing tournament play against this cold Pirates’ offense.
Pitcher Rating:65.2
Francisco Liriano (FD: $8600, DK: $9100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.65 — K Rate: 27.4% — K/9: 9.46 — BB Rate: 12.1% — GB Rate: 47.9%
2014: SIERA: 3.61 — K Rate: 25.3% — K/9: 9.70 — BB Rate: 11.7% — GB Rate: 54.4%
St. Louis Cardinals vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.292 (Rank: 26)
Strikeout Rate: 21.4% (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Liriano has pitched well this season, posting a 3.65 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.5. The biggest fear with Liriano is that he can’t find the strike zone and ends up driving his pitch count up with walks. He has walked 12.1% of the batters that he has faced this season and the Cardinals have the second-highest walk rate against southpaws this season. It’s certainly a concern tonight, but the upside is there too. The Cardinals are ranked 26th in wOBA against southpaws this season and Liriano has a great track record at PNC Park.

2014 vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.384 — ISO: 0.212 — OBP: 0.401
Analysis: Shortstop is typically one of the thinner positions each night and outside of Troy Tulowitzki, options are pretty scarce again tonight. Peralta is a strong value play though, as he is underpriced given his matchup against a southpaw. Peralta had a .384 wOBA and a .212 ISO against left-handed pitching last season.

Eric Stults (FD: $5900, DK: $5900)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.81 — K Rate: 12.3% — K/9: 4.6 — BB Rate: 5.7% — GB Rate: 40.2%
2014: SIERA: 4.33 — K Rate: 14.6% — K/9: 5.68 — BB Rate: 5.9% — GB Rate: 43.3%
Washington Nationals vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.316 (Rank: 16)
Strikeout Rate: 20.0% (Rank: 13)
Analysis: Stults has put up very similar numbers to his 2014 campaign and unfortunately, that’s not a good sign. He has a 4.81 SIERA with a low K/9 of 4.6. Even though the Nationals are right around the league average in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season, they are a scary lineup when facing a southpaw. Stults is not a recommended fantasy option tonight.
Pitcher Rating:34.3
Gio Gonzalez (FD: $8900, DK: $9500)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.45 — K Rate: 23.3% — K/9: 9.2 — BB Rate: 9.8% — GB Rate: 57.6%
2014: SIERA: 3.43 — K Rate: 24.8% — K/9: 9.19 — BB Rate: 8.6% — GB Rate: 44.8%
Atlanta Braves vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.304 (Rank: 20)
Strikeout Rate: 21.2% (Rank: 18)
Analysis: Gonzalez is coming off of his best performance of the season, striking out nine batters without giving up a run against the Mets. Unlike hitters where hot streaks can sometimes be attributed to randomness, it’s never a bad idea to target a pitcher in the midst of a hot stretch. Gonzalez has great strikeout potential, he’s pitching at home, and he’s facing a Braves’ offense that is ranked 20th in wOBA against left-handed pitching. I have Gonzalez pegged as my second favorite pitcher tonight, right behind Matt Harvey.

Analysis: Zimmerman’s numbers against southpaws aren’t going to jump off the page at you, but he does have a .217 ISO this season which is good to see. We love targeting players that are capable of hitting for extra bases, especially at a discounted price point. Zimmerman is listed at a bargain-bin price of $2,700 on FanDuel and he draws an excellent matchup against Eric Stults.

New York Yankees vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.313 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 19.2% (Rank: 11)
Analysis: Gonzalez is one of those pitchers that rarely finds himself on anyone’s daily fantasy baseball rosters. He has a mediocre SIERA (4.07) and an above average walk rate (9.4%). That’s not a great combination, especially when you are pitching the the American League. Gonzalez draws a difficult matchup against the Yankees and he can be avoided in all league formats.

Baltimore Orioles vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.338 (Rank: 2)
Strikeout Rate: 23.8% (Rank: 28)
Analysis: Warren has been a serviceable starter for the Yankees this season, but nothing more. You may look at last season’s numbers and expect him to start pitching better, but those were out of the bullpen. It’s a much different story as a starter. He doesn’t have a high enough strikeout rate to overcome the tough matchup against the Orioles, who are ranked second in wOBA against right-handed pitching.

Analysis: Paredes may be a little too expensive on DraftKings, but he should be considered one of the top value plays at second base tonight on FanDuel. He homered last night in Yankee Stadium and he draws an equally favorable matchup tonight against Adam Warren. Paredes has been red-hot to start the season, posting a .441 wOBA and a .321 ISO against right-handed pitching.

Analysis: It’s just a hunch, but I have a feeling the short porch is right is going to be busy tonight in Yankee Stadium. We have two average right-handed hurlers on the mound with plenty of power bats that hit from the left side of the plate. One of which is Mr. Teixeira, who has a .421 wOBA and a .453 ISO against right-handed pitching this season. The best part is that he’s considerably cheaper than the other elite options at first base.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.255 (Rank: 30)
Strikeout Rate: 20.2% (Rank: 16)
Analysis: The Dark Knight takes the mound in Gotham City Philadelphia tonight. He is the elite pitching option on the board and it could be one of those nights where it would hurt a lot worst to fade him than to go with the crowd and target him. He has an elite SIERA of 2.83 and an elite K/9 of 9.1. He rarely walks batters and he draws arguably the best matchup on the board, as the Phillies are ranked dead last in wOBA against right-handed pitching.
Pitcher Rating:97.7

Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.02 — K Rate: 24.1% — K/9: 9.24 — BB Rate: 12.0% — GB Rate: 51.0%

New York Mets vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 13)
Strikeout Rate: 19.1% (Rank: 12)
Analysis: If you are looking to go against the grain in a tournament, Hamels could be a very sneaky play tonight. He could obviously see very little run support with Matt Harvey pitching opposite him, but as we have seen time and time again, even aces can get knocked around. Hamels has an elite strikeout rate and a great track record at home. He’s not a recommended cash game play by any means, but it could pay off to use him in large qualifier or GPP.

wOBA: 0.368 (Rank: 1)
Strikeout Rate: 14.6% (Rank: 2)
Analysis: After having a stellar 2014 campaign, Miley has really struggled out of the gates here in 2015. He has a 5.25 SIERA with a walk rate that is nearly as high as his strikeout rate. Not only is his current form an issue, but he also draws the worst pitching matchup on the board (outside of Coors Field). The Blue Jays are ranked first in wOBA against left-handed pitching and the Rogers Centre is one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball.

Bautista has as much upside as any other hitter on the board tonight. He draws a terrific matchup against Wade Miley and he is coming off of a season where he had a .461 wOBA and a .284 ISO against southpaws.
