Pitcher Grind Down
Carlos Rodon (FD: $6800, DK: $5600)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 28 — SIERA: 4.92 — K Rate: 19.1% — K/9: 7.85 — BB Rate: 14.5% — FB Rate: 32.9% — HR/FB: 3.6%
Texas Rangers vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.338 (Rank: 2) — Strikeout Rate: 20.3% (Rank: 15) — wRC+: 112 (Rank: 6)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.79 (Rank: 13)
Analysis: Rodon had excellent strikeout numbers coming through the minor league system, but that has yet to translate into an elite strikeout rate in the majors. He has been knocked around in his starts this season, posting a 4.92 SIERA with a very high walk rate of 14.5%. He needs to improve his command before we consider him as an option in daily fantasy. He can safely be avoided tonight against the Rangers, who currently have the 2nd-highest wOBA (.338) against left-handed pitching this season.
Pitcher Rating:40.1
Yovani Gallardo (FD: $7200, DK: $6500)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 62 — SIERA: 4.00 — K Rate: 16.8% — K/9: 6.46 — BB Rate: 7.1% — FB Rate: 28.6% — HR/FB: 12.1%
2014: IP: 192 — SIERA: 3.78 — K Rate: 17.9% — K/9: 6.83 — BB Rate: 6.6% — FB Rate: 29.0% — HR/FB: 12.1%
Chicago White Sox vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.300 (Rank: 21) — Strikeout Rate: 19.1% (Rank: 10) — wRC+: 87 (Rank: 25)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.69 (Rank: 28)
Analysis: Gallardo is having a mediocre season by his standards. He has a 4.00 SIERA with a K/9 of 6.5. The White Sox offense has struggled to score runs at times this season, but they have Jose Abreu back in the lineup, which should help. Gallardo isn’t the worst play on the board tonight, but he’s not on my radar. There are safer options for cash games and pitchers with more upside that I’d rather target in tournaments.

Jose Abreu (FD: $3500, DK: $5300)
Position Eligibility: FD: 1B — DK: 1B

2014 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 622 — wOBA: 0.394 — ISO: 0.250 — wRC+: 153
Analysis: Abreu was back in the White Sox lineup last night and he quickly announced his return with a two-run home run off of Nick Martinez. Abreu has a .364 wOBA and a .212 ISO against right-handed pitching this season. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against reverse-splits pitcher Yovani Gallardo, who has given up a .322 wOBA to right-handed hitters.

Position Eligibility: FD: OF — DK: OF
2015 vs. LH Pitching: PA: 118 — wOBA: 0.381 — ISO: 0.162 — wRC+: 142
Analysis: Deshields has been a bright spot for the Rangers this season. He has played so well that he is now batting leadoff. He has decent power numbers and he is a great source of speed. His price has come up on both FanDuel and DraftKings, but he’s still very playable against rookie Carlos Rodon, who has given up a .348 wOBA to right-handed hitters.

Trevor Bauer (FD: $8500, DK: $7900)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 63 — SIERA: 3.74 — K Rate: 24.9% — K/9: 9.19 — BB Rate: 9.6% — FB Rate: 44.2% — HR/FB: 6.8%

Kansas City Royals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 10) — Strikeout Rate: 16.7% (Rank: 3) — wRC+: 103 (Rank: 6)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.65 (Rank: 29)
Analysis: As I mentioned last night, it’s tough targeting pitchers against the Royals, even when that pitcher’s name is Corey Kluber. If the Royals can get to Kluber, they can certainly get to Bauer. The Royals are ranked 10th or better in wOBA (.318), strikeout rate (16.7%), and wRC+ (103) against right-handed pitching this season. There is no reason to take the risk with Bauer tonight in Kansas City.
Pitcher Rating:59.5
Chris Young (FD: $6300, DK: $4900)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 40 — SIERA: 4.71 — K Rate: 19.1% — K/9: 6.64 — BB Rate: 7.0% — FB Rate: 62.8% — HR/FB: 4.2%
2014: IP: 165 — SIERA: 5.24 — K Rate: 15.7% — K/9: 5.89 — BB Rate: 8.7% — FB Rate: 58.7% — HR/FB: 8.8%
Cleveland Indians vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.319 (Rank: 9) — Strikeout Rate: 17.8% (Rank: 6) — wRC+: 107 (Rank: 4)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.94 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Young is off to a rocky start this season, posting a 4.71 SIERA with a K/9 of 6.6. He is a very tall pitcher, which can create some unique angles, but he doesn’t have that overwhelming stuff that he can strike batters out with. He draws arguably the worst pitching matchup on the board, as the Indians are ranked 4th in wRC+ (107) and 6th in strikeout rate (17.8%) against right-handed pitching this season.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 580 — wOBA: 0.336 — ISO: 0.213 — wRC+: 118
Analysis: Since the start of 2014, Chris Young has given up a .335 wOBA to batters that hit from the left side of the plate. While all of the left-handed hitters in the Indians’ lineup are in play tonight, only one of them has three career home runs off of Young. That man is Brandon Moss, who has terrific power numbers against right-handed pitching.

Matt Harvey (FD: $10700, DK: $10400)
Pitching Stats:
2015: IP: 66 — SIERA: 2.87 — K Rate: 27.0% — K/9: 9.59 — BB Rate: 4.2% — FB Rate: 38.1% — HR/FB: 10.9%
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 10) — Strikeout Rate: 19.4% (Rank: 11) — wRC+: 96 (Rank: 13)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.64 (Rank: 30)
Analysis: The Dark Knight takes the mound tonight for the Mets, who open their series against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Harvey has had some bad luck recently, but he still owns a 2.87 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.6. As I’ve mentioned time and time again, SIERA is a much better indicator of future ERA than past ERA is. The Diamondbacks are an above-average offense against right-handed pitching, but Harvey has double-digit strikeout upside in this matchup. He may be worth the price of admission on a night with so few aces on the mound.
Pitcher Rating:85.1
Jeremy Hellickson (FD: $5900, DK: $5900)
Editor’s Note: Jeremy Hellickson has been scratched from tonight’s start. Left-hander Robbie Ray will start in his place.

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.83 (Rank: 10)
Analysis: Hellickson is having a subpar season by his standards. He owns a 4.37 SIERA with a K/9 of 6.2. He is a fly-ball pitcher that doesn’t exactly benefit from playing in Chase Field. He does draw a favorable matchup tonight against the Mets though. New York is ranked 29th in wOBA (.287) and 20th in strikeout rate (20.5%) against right-handed pitching this season. At his price point, he may be worth a look as a deep sleeper in tournaments.

Analysis: Murphy has been swinging a hot bat with 14 hits over his last ten games. His price has come up across the industry, but he’s still in play tonight against Jeremy Hellickson, who has given up a .328 wOBA to left-handed hitters. Murphy also sees a positive ballpark shift playing in the hitter-friendly Chase Field.

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.91 (Rank: 5)
Analysis: Wacha is another example of a pitcher that is overpriced in daily fantasy because his ERA is much lower than his SIERA. There is nearly a two-run gap between the two, which isn’t going to hold up over the course of the season. With a strikeout rate that is down significantly from last season, he’s an easy pitcher to avoid at his price point. He draws a very tough matchup against the Dodgers, who are ranked 1st in wOBA (.355) and wRC+ (128) against right-handed pitching this season.

Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.75 (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Frias doesn’t have a high-strikeout rate, but he has a decent SIERA and a great offense behind him. At his price point, all he needs is five mediocre innings of work and a win to pay off his salary. He is only $4,500 on DraftKings! I’d be all over Frias at that price if it weren’t for his matchup against the Cardinals. St. Louis is ranked 8th or better in wOBA (.320), strikeout rate (18.9%), and wRC+ (102) against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Ramirez is coming off of his best start of the season, striking out seven batters in seven shutout innings against the Orioles. He gets to face his former team tonight, who has really struggled to score runs this season. Unfortunately, one start isn’t enough for me to believe in Ramirez. He is a bit too erratic for my liking and we like to take the safest route possible when it comes to pitching. He’s a deep tournament play at best tonight against Seattle.

Analysis: Elias is a good left-handed pitcher with decent strikeout potential in the right matchup. While the Rays do hit left-handed pitching well, they also strike out at a high clip. Elias is a small favorite tonight at home in a game that features a low total of 7.5 runs. With the lack of pitching options tonight, he’s worth a look as an SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

2015 vs. LH Pitching: PA: 85 — wOBA: 0.359 — ISO: 0.233 — wRC+: 137
Analysis: Butler hit his fourth home run of the year last night in a win over the Angels. He has been one of the best value plays on the board for weeks and sites and just barely starting to adjust his price. He has a .359 wOBA and a .233 ISO against left-handed pitching this season.

Nelson Cruz (FD: $4100, DK: $5100)
Position Eligibility: FD: OF — DK: OF
2015 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 222 — wOBA: 0.382 — ISO: 0.244 — wRC+: 151
2014 vs. RH Pitching: PA: 678 — wOBA: 0.356 — ISO: 0.254 — wRC+: 128
Analysis: Cruz has been a great addition to the Mariners’ offense, the problem is that he hasn’t had any help around him. He’s easily the top play on Seattle tonight, as they face Erasmo Ramirez at home. Ramirez is a reverse-splits pitcher, who has given up a .377 wOBA to right-handed hitters since the start of 2014.
