MLB Grind Down: Thursday, May 21st
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

Pitcher Grind Down
Archie Bradley (FD: $6800, DK: $5100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 5.35 — K Rate: 16.3% — K/9: 6.14 — BB Rate: 15.2% — FB Rate: 34.4% — HR/FB: 4.8%
Miami Marlins vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.294 (Rank: 25)
Strikeout Rate: 21.4% (Rank: 23)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.78 (Rank: 19)
Analysis: After surprising a couple of teams in his first couple of starts, Bradley has been knocked around recently. On the season, he has a 5.35 SIERA with a low K/9 of 6.1. He draws a favorable matchup against the Marlins (who may be looking for another new manager soon), but he’s not on my radar in the early slate. His strikeout potential isn’t high enough to make up for the few runs that he’ll likely give up.
Pitcher Rating:40.6
Mat Latos (FD: $6400, DK: $6600)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.40 — K Rate: 17.5% — K/9: 6.99 — BB Rate: 8.4% — FB Rate: 32.2% — HR/FB: 7.7%
2014: SIERA: 4.08 — K Rate: 17.6% — K/9: 6.51 — BB Rate: 6.2% — FB Rate: 39.9% — HR/FB: 7.3%
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.311 (Rank: 16)
Strikeout Rate: 19.4% (Rank: 11)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.67 (Rank: 28)
Analysis: Latos was shelled in his last start, but he had put together two quality outings in his previous two starts. He has been a serviceable starter for the Marlins, but certainly not a pitcher that we need to go out of our way to target in daily fantasy. He owns a 4.40 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.0. Latos is a small favorite against the Diamondbacks and with Paul Goldschmidt out of the lineup, he may deserve a look as an SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

Ender Inciarte (FD: $3200, DK: $3500)
Position Eligibility: FD: OF — DK: OF
2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.333 — ISO: 0.135 — wRC+: 105
2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.307 — ISO: 0.097 — wRC+: 90
Analysis: Inciarte’s price has come up a bit on FanDuel, but he’s still at a very playable $3,500 on DraftKings. If you’ve read the Grind Down before, then you know how much I love targeting cheap speed at the top of the order. Inciarte has hit right-handed pitching well this season with a .333 wOBA and he’s already stolen five bases.
Secondary Plays:
David Peralta (FD: $3200, DK: $3700)
Position Eligibility: FD: OF — DK: OF
2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.383 — ISO: 0.263 — wRC+: 138
2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.369 — ISO: 0.194 — wRC+: 132
Miami
Giancarlo Stanton (FD: $4600, DK: $5100)
Position Eligibility: FD: OF — DK: OF
2015 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.368 — ISO: 0.302 — wRC+: 131
2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.391 — ISO: 0.262 — wRC+: 150
Analysis: Stanton’s numbers against right-handed pitching are a little down this season, but 30% of his hits have gone for extra bases, so he’s certainly making good contact. Archie Bradley has been fairly efficient against both left and right-handed hitters this season, but he’s a struggling rookie making a start on the road. The Marlins offense should finally snap out of it’s funk.
Secondary Plays:
Dee Gordon (FD: $3600, DK: $4700)

J.A. Happ (FD: $7500, DK: $7100)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.79 — K Rate: 19.1% — K/9: 6.95 — BB Rate: 4.9% — FB Rate: 32.8% — HR/FB: 8.9%
2014: SIERA: 3.94 — K Rate: 19.8% — K/9: 7.58 — BB Rate: 7.6% — FB Rate: 39.5% — HR/FB: 11.5%
Baltimore Orioles vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.314 (Rank: 19)
Strikeout Rate: 16.3% (Rank: 2)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.74 (Rank: 22)
Analysis: Happ has pitched well this season with a 3.79 SIERA and a K.9 of 7.0. He has cut down on his walks and he has a K/BB ratio close to 4:1. If you trust the numbers, he looks like a decent play today against the Orioles, who are ranked 19th in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season. However, it’s hard to trust an underdog in a game that features a total of 8.0 runs. For that reason, Happ is best suited as a tournament play.
Pitcher Rating:53.6
Chris Tillman (FD: $6600, DK: $6300)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 5.04 — K Rate: 15.8% — K/9: 6.34 — BB Rate: 11.1% — FB Rate: 38.8% — HR/FB: 12.8%
2014: SIERA: 4.26 — K Rate: 17.2% — K/9: 6.51 — BB Rate: 7.6% — FB Rate: 39.3% — HR/FB: 8.3%
Seattle Mariners vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.300 (Rank: 22)
Strikeout Rate: 21.6% (Rank: 24)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.87 (Rank: 8)
Analysis: Tillman may not be as bad as his 6.39 ERA would suggest, but he still has a 5.04 SIERA on the season. He hasn’t struck many batters out this season and he has walked 11% of the batters that he has faced. He’ll likely turn it around as the season progresses, but until he does, he can be avoided in all league formats. The Mariners may not hit right-handed pitching well, but they do rank 8th in pitches per plate appearance.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.382 — ISO: 0.166 — wRC+: 151
Analysis: Cano has struggled against right-handed pitching this season, posting a .312 wOBA and a very low ISO of .095. That said, he’s cheap and he has a good matchup against Chris Tillman. Cano has gotten the best of Tillman in their previous meetings, going 12-for-28 with two home runs. Take advantage of the discounted price and the fact that he’s playing in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards.

Analysis: Jones went 3-for-4 with a run last night, but unfortunately, he didn’t get any help from his teammates. He now has a .547 wOBA and a .444 ISO against left-handed pitching this season. He draws another favorable matchup against a southpaw today, as J.A. Happ has given up a career .332 wOBA to batters that hit from the right side of the plate.

Detroit Tigers vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.328 (Rank: 4)
Strikeout Rate: 19.2% (Rank: 10)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.86 (Rank: 9)
Analysis: Feldman is not the prototypical daily fantasy pitcher. He has a low strikeout rate and most of his starts come in hitter-friendly ballparks. To his credit, he has a 3.74 SIERA on the season. Unfortunately, that’s not enough to persuade us into taking him against the Tigers in Comerica. Detroit is ranked 10th or better in wOBA, strikeout rate, and pitches per plate appearance against right-handed pitching this season.
Pitcher Rating:35.2
David Price (FD: $10900, DK: $9600)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 3.97 — K Rate: 18.8% — K/9: 7.13 — BB Rate: 5.4% — FB Rate: 37.6% — HR/FB: 9.7%

Houston Astros vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.315 (Rank: 18)
Strikeout Rate: 22.6% (Rank: 23)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.82 (Rank: 12)
Analysis: Price has really struggled this season. I suppose his struggles are still better than a lot of starting pitchers, but his numbers have dropped considerably. He owns a 3.97 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.1. His walks are up and his strikeouts are down. Diving a little deeper into his profile, we see that his velocity and swinging strike rate are similar to that of last season, which is promising. He draws a favorable strikeout matchup today against the Astros, who are ranked 23rd against left-handed pitching. Price is a solid alternative if you are looking to fade Clayton Kershaw in the early slate of games.

Analysis: There is something about Miguel Cabrera and day games. I believe it was a week ago today when he hit two home runs and was basically the difference between cashing and being left out of the money. He draws a favorable matchup against Scott Feldman, who has given up a .334 wOBA to right-handed hitters since the start of 2014. wOBA: 0.327 (Rank: 13)

Analysis: Garcia will be making his first start of the season, after dealing with a shoulder injury to start the year. He has pitched well at the major league level, he just hasn’t been able to stay healthy. He pitched six innings in his rehab start at Triple-A and the Cardinals were encouraged by what they saw. I typically like to take a wait and see approach with pitchers coming back from injury, but he’s a decent tournament play against a Mets’ offense that has gone cold.

wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 9)

Analysis: deGrom hasn’t had quite the success that he did last season, but he has still pitched well this year with a 3.71 SIERA and a K/9 of 8.1. The two concerns with him today are his matchup and his run support. The Cardinals are ranked 9th in wOBA and 7th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. I would typically avoid deGrom in this situation, but his $9,000 price tag has me intrigued. He offers great upside for the price and is worth a look in tournaments and as an SP2.

Analysis: Granted, a lot of Cuddyer’s success last season was helped by the Coors Field effect, but he’s a player that has hit left-handed pitching well throughout his entire career. He’s extremely cheap today (especially on FanDuel) and he gets to face a southpaw that is making his first start of the season. Cuddyer is one of those cheap bats that will allow you to afford to spend up on Clayton Kershaw or David Price.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. LH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.323 (Rank: 16)
Strikeout Rate: 16.8% (Rank: 4)
Pitches per Plate Appearance: 3.63 (Rank: 29)
Analysis: De La Rosa is the one Rockies’ pitcher that has decent numbers this season. He currently owns a 3.69 SIERA with a K/9 of 10.0. He does walk a lot of batters, but a high strikeout rate can make up for it. I’m not buying in on him being a high-strikeout pitcher over the course of the season though. We all know to avoid pitchers in Coors Field and I will not be making an exception for De La Rosa today.

Freddy Galvis (FD: $3100, DK: $3800)
Position Eligibility: FD: SS — DK: 3B/SS
2015 vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.486 — ISO: 0.034 — wRC+: 210
2014 vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.211 — ISO: 0.136 — wRC+: 29
Analysis: Galvis has been quiet in this series, which should help lower his ownership level for today’s game in Coors Field. I’m all about the Galvis today though. He has a .486 wOBA against southpaws this season and he is playing in the best hitter’s venue in all of baseball. The best part may be that his price has come down on both FanDuel and DraftKings.

2014 vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.334 — ISO: 0.220 — wRC+: 96
Analysis: Gonzalez’s numbers may not look great this season, but he has hits in six of his last eight games, two of which were multi-hit efforts. His price is still affordable on FanDuel and DraftKings and he draws a favorable matchup against Jerome Williams, who has given up a .352 wOBA to left-handed hitters since the start of 2014. We’ve all been waiting for a Rockies’ stack to pay off and I believe today is that day.
