MLB Grind Down: Wednesday, May 6th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing!
Note: Fantasy point averages listed use FanDuel scoring. For more info on FanDuel’s scoring system, check out the scoring systems section of our FanDuel review.

Tom Koehler (FD: $6600, DK: $6000)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 4.68 — K Rate: 16.1% — K/9: 6 — BB Rate: 8.9% — GB Rate: 41.7%
2014: SIERA: 4.16 — K Rate: 19.1% — K/9: 7.20 — BB Rate: 8.8% — GB Rate: 43.1%
Washington Nationals vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.294 (Rank: 24)
Strikeout Rate: 21.9% (Rank: 24)
Analysis: Koehler is off to a slow start this season, posting a 4.68 SIERA with a low K/9 of 6.0. He is s coming off of a 2014 season where he had markedly better splits at home than he did on the road. On paper, his matchup against the Nationals is a favorable one, as Washington is ranked 24th in wOBA and 24th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. That said, he’s a huge underdog with Max Scherzer pitching opposite him.
Pitcher Rating:50.9
Max Scherzer (FD: $10800, DK: $12000)
Pitching Stats:
2015: SIERA: 2.74 — K Rate: 27.9% — K/9: 9.84 — BB Rate: 3.6% — GB Rate: 38.0%
2014: SIERA: 2.98 — K Rate: 27.9% — K/9: 10.29 — BB Rate: 7.0% — GB Rate: 36.7%
Miami Marlins vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.299 (Rank: 19)
Strikeout Rate: 21.7% (Rank: 23)
Analysis: Scherzer is the top pitcher on the board today, but unfortunately he is playing in the early slate. His ownership will be through the roof in the early leagues and for good reason. He has been outstanding in his first few starts with the Nationals, posting a 2.74 SIERA with a K/9 of 9.9. He has cut down on his walks this season, which only adds to his fantasy appeal. He is a large favorite against the Marlins, who are ranked 19th in wOBA and 23rd in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Goldschmidt has crushed left-handed pitching this season with a .569 wOBA and a .500 ISO. He is playing in the best hitter’s venue in baseball and he is facing Tyler Matzek, who gave up a .372 wOBA to right-handed hitters last season. Analysis: Dickerson has everything that we are looking for in DFS. San Francisco Giants vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.306 (Rank: 16)
Strikeout Rate: 17.7% (Rank: 7)
Analysis: Kennedy is coming off of his best start of the season, but it was still a mediocre performance by his standards. Through his first three outings, he has a 4.30 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.1. In the past, he has been an elite strikeout pitcher, with a K/9 of 9.3 and a strikeout rate of 24.5% last season. The strikeouts will come, but unfortunately it may not be today against the Giants. San Francisco is right around the league average in wOBA against right-handed pitching, but they strike out at the seventh-lowest rate of any team.

San Diego Padres vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.308 (Rank: 14)
Strikeout Rate: 20.2% (Rank: 16)
Analysis: Heston’s numbers have improved across the board this season. Through his first five starts, he has posted a 3.17 SIERA with a K/9 of 7.0. He has kept his walks down and he’s been able to produce an elite ground-ball rate of 59.6%. He is a small favorite today against the Padres, who are ranked 14th in wOBA against right-handed pitching. He doesn’t have the same strikeout potential that his counterpart Ian Kennedy does, but he’s much cheaper and gets the nod as the better play of the two.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. RH Pitching: (2015)
wOBA: 0.279 (Rank: 27)
Strikeout Rate: 21.50% (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Leake has had a mediocre start to the season, posting a 4.07 SIERA with a K/9 of 6.3. Those numbers certainly aren’t overwhelming, but you have to love the matchup against a Pirates’ offense that continues to struggle offensively. They are currently ranked 27th in wOBA against right-handed pitching and 21st in strikeout rate. Leake’s biggest struggle is with left-handed hitters and this Pirates’ lineup consists primarily of right-handed bats. Leake is a sneaky tournament play tonight.

Analysis: Cole is off to a fantastic start this season, posting a 2.35 SIERA with a K/9 of 10.3. He has an elite strikeout rate of 28.9% and he gets to face a Reds’ offense that ranks below the league average in both wOBA and strikeouts against right-handed pitching. Cole’s price has yet to fully reflect his recent level of production, making him one of the top pitching options on the board tonight.

Analysis: As mentioned above, the best hitters to target against Mike Leake are the ones that can hit from the left-side of the plate. Leake gave up a .352 wOBA to left-handed hitters last season. Walker is a switch-hitters that hits well from both sides of the plate. He is also an extremely cheap second base option tonight on FanDuel.

Strikeout Rate: 14.40% (Rank: 2)
Analysis: Sabathia’s numbers on the season aren’t terrible, but he is one of my least favorite pitching options in the evening slate of games. He has to face a Blue Jays’ offense that is ranked first in wOBA against left-handed pitching this season. Not only that, but he has to face them in the Rogers Centre, which is one of the best hitter’s parks in all of baseball.

Analysis: The ball hasn’t quite flown out of the park the way that we are accustomed to seeing in the Rogers Centre, but I’m a bit surprised that the total for this game is set at only 8.5 runs. I could see either of these offenses putting up that many runs on their own. Buehrle currently has a 5.04 SIERA and a very low K/9 of 3.5. That’s not going to garner any fantasy consideration anytime soon.

2014 vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.429 — ISO: 0.353 — OBP: 0.380
Analysis: The Blue Jays are facing a left-handed pitcher, which means Donaldson immediately becomes a top fantasy option. He had a .429 wOBA against southpaws last season and he’s back at it again with a .444 wOBA this season. He draws a terrific matchup against CC Sabathia, who gave up a .401 wOBA against right-handed pitching last season.
