Best MLB Player Props for Friday, April 3rd
Here are my top player prop bets for today, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM ET on Friday, April 3rd:
- Joe Boyle Over/Under 14.5 Outs Recorded
- Joey Cantillo Over/Under 15.5 Outs Recorded
- Kerry Carpenter Over/Under 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Joe Boyle OVER 14.5 Outs Recorded (-140, Novig)
Boyle averaged 3.57 pitches per plate appearance against the Cardinals in his first start of the season. He seemed to take a little bit of velocity off of his heater in an effort to land it in the zone more consistently. He ended the day with 76.1% first-pitch strikes and 69.3% strikes overall.
On Friday in Minnesota, the temperature is forecast to be near 40 degrees, with the wind blowing straight in around first pitch. These are great pitching conditions, and it’s a favorable matchup for Boyle against a relatively weak Twins offense that is traveling to a new city without the benefit of an off day. Boyle is also fighting for a more permanent role at the MLB level, with Ryan Pepiot nearing a return from the injured list.
Joey Cantillo UNDER 15.5 Outs Recorded (-158, DraftKings)
Last season, there were 143 pitchers who threw 90+ innings – only 11 averaged more pitches per batter faced than Cantillo. Last Thursday, Cantillo averaged an inefficient 5.06 pitches per batter faced against the Mariners, forcing Cleveland to go to their bullpen in the 4th inning.
Today, Cantillo will have to contend with a patient Cubs lineup that ranks 29th in swing% this season. Only 9 teams have seen more pitches per plate appearance than the Cubs through the conclusion of play on Thursday.
The forecast in Cleveland is a little bit on the pitcher-friendly side for a southpaw, but the Guardians’ arm barn is completely rested following an off day on Thursday and minimal usage earlier this week. The Guardians will likely be thrilled if Cantillo can give them 5 innings.
Kerry Carpenter OVER 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-122, Caesars)
Last season, Michael McGreevy struggled to a 5.84 FIP and 1.73 WHIP across the platoon, allowing lefties to hit .318. In his first turn through the rotation this season, McGreevy dialed back on his 4-seam usage, which theoretically could help him limit some damage in those matchups.
Still, McGreevy’s fastball sits in the low-90s, and he struggles to stay off the barrel. Carpenter had a 122 wRC+ and .812 OPS against RHP last season. The season prior, he had a 175 wRC+ and .994 OPS against RHP. Carpenter should have some opportunities to do damage, and his spot in the 3-hole puts him in a prime RBI role too.
