The UFC gave us a one-week respite before the combat sports leader starts the surge toward summer with an 11-fight advertisement for the upcoming pay-per-view event. All jokes aside, the matchmaking on this card is a mixed bag with some hidden gems like Filho vs. Nascimento and Gamrot vs. Klein juxtaposed with some matchups of dubious importance between lackluster fighters (like dos Santos vs. Ardelean, a combined 0-4 in the UFC). This is a filler event, but each matchup represents a new opportunity, and the main event should help clarify the now crowded contendership queue in the women’s flyweight division. Erin Blanchfield is 1-1 in UFC main events and is looking to establish herself as the next woman up, but she will have to get through a tough and seasoned Maycee “The Future” Barber to get a shot at gold.

Rayanne dos Santos ($9,300) vs. Alice Ardelean ($6,900)

Weight Class: W115lb. (Women’s Strawweight)

Rayanne dos Santos (0-2 UFC) has dropped her first 2 UFC outings, but I think you could make a credible case she should be 2-0 in the promotion. Puja Tomar technically outlanded dos Santos on significant and total strikes over the course of 15 minutes, but it was dos Santos who outlanded Tomar 47 to 29 on significant head strikes, one of the best predictors for who will win a judges’ decision. Rayanne dos Santos is a BJJ black belt, she has the best win between both of these women on paper against Jillian DeCoursey (6-4 pro, former Invicta FC Champion), and she showed off solid wrestling and grappling fundamentals against Talita Alencar, a legit BJJ world champion. Rayanne dos Santos has been screwed by the judges twice in as many UFC appearances, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she was more motivated to grapple offensively and seek a finish.

Alice Ardelean (0-2 UFC) clearly tries very hard and wants to win her fights, but she is not very talented. Her athleticism and technical skills leave a lot to be desired on film. She was able to outland Melissa Martinez (1-1 UFC) on significant strikes in her last fight, but it wasn’t enough to convince the judges because she was also folded in half and frozen by a kick to the body (fight easily could’ve been stopped). The fight prior against Shauna Bannon (2-1 UFC), she was able to notch 2 takedowns and more than 5 minutes of control time, but she still managed to get outlanded by 20+ significant strikes, and she walked onto a lot of damage over the course of 15.
