The octagon returns to London, England for a night of fights in front of a raucous O2 Arena. The card will be headlined by a welterweight contender’s fight featuring England’s own Leon “Rocky” Edwards in his first fight back since dropping the title. He will be taking on Philadelphia’s Sean Brady, a short notice replacement who is looking to steal Edward’s shine and return to the states as a number one contender. The welterweight top 5 is getting awfully crowded right now, and only one man can remain atop the heap. The card will also feature great action, local flare, and fun style matchups. Let’s break down the main card, beginning with an all-Euro tilt at featherweight.

Morgan Charriere ($8,700) vs. Nathaniel Wood ($7,500)

Fight Odds: -148 Charriere vs. +122 Wood
Weight Class: 145lb. (Featherweight)

NathanielWoodUFC

Nathaniel Wood (8-3 UFC) enters this bout as an underdog for just the 3rd time in 12 UFC appearances. What Wood lacks in durability he makes up for with skill, craft, and tenacity. We have seen Wood rally from a series of fouls to nearly stop Naimov in the final frame, we have seen him get up from knockdowns only to knock down his opponent in return (Fili), and we have seen him make huge improvements in his game over time. Judges love Nathaniel Wood’s pace and activity level, as evidenced by his 5-2 record in the promotion when fights hit the scorecards. Wood has only been outlanded twice in 11 appearances, and he was never outlanded by more than 4 significant strikes. If he is able to avoid big strikes, dictate control positions, and fire up the crowd, he is likely to take home a competitive fight on the judges’ scorecards.

His opponent will be Morgan Charriere (2-1 UFC), a fighter who is much less experienced at this level and who has already suffered 10 defeats as a professional. Charriere has an alarming 5-9 career record to the decision prop (0-1 UFC), and he has gone to split or majority decision at least 9 times. Charriere has explosive finishing abilities and superior durability compared to Wood, but he has never landed more than 49 significant strikes in a UFC fight (Wood has a high of 136), he has never won a UFC fight outside of Paris, and he has never beaten a UFC opponent with a winning record. Charriere has a lot of the right elements of a good fighter, but he hasn’t shown an ability to consistently leverage his skills to achieve victory. His powerful striking produced finishes against lower-level UFC fighters like Gabriel Miranda (1-2 UFC) and Manolo Zecchini (0-1 UFC), but when he stepped up against Chepe Mariscal (5-0 UFC) in Las Vegas, the ghosts of his past haunted him once again, and he lost the split decision, getting outlanded 71 to 49.

This is likely to be a highly competitive fight, but I have to trust the UFC experience, the proven volume, and the superior process of Nathaniel Wood to earn him a close decision with the vocal support of the London faithful backing the Londoner against the Frenchman. At a $7,500 salary, Wood has justified this price tag in 8 of 8 UFC wins with 3 scores of 100+.

Prediction: Nathaniel Wood defeats Morgan Charriere via SDEC
