Love it or hate it, the UFC Apex has become a staple for the combat sports leader. This event is pretty light in terms of card depth because several prominent bouts fell off on short notice, but the main event is must-see television, as fan-favorite Carlos Prates gets his chance to break into the crowded welterweight Top Fifteen. Neil Magny is defending his ranking in a record-breaking 34th UFC appearance. We will also be treated to the UFC debut of hyped prospect Reinier de Ridder, the self-proclaimed best grappler in Mixed Martial Arts.

Gillian Robertson has been on fire since dropping to the strawweight division, winning 3 of her first 4 outings and securing 2 wins by stoppage along the way. In her last bout, Robertson beat the tar out of Michelle Waterson-Gomez to the tune of a +56 significant strike differential and 12 minutes of control time. When she is able to get takedowns, she is one of the most proven women in the UFC regardless of weight class. She has secured 9 of 11 UFC wins via finish, and she has only been finished twice against much larger women in Mayra Bueno Silva and Maycee Barber.

Luana Pinheiro has skills of her own on the mat as a BJJ black belt, but her skills haven’t been translating in the UFC, as she has been finished in both of her losses, and she secured her 2 wins in competitive decisions. Pinheiro was submitted by Angela Hill her last time out (Hill’s first SUB as a professional in 30+ fights), and the fight before, she was knocked out by Amanda Ribas (Ribas’ only UFC win via KO/TKO). Her cardio is suspect, her will to compete leaves something to be desired, and she doesn’t throw enough volume to compete at the UFC level. If she can defend takedowns, she may be able to rock Robertson with her power or fight to a competitive decision, but I think her time with the promotion is running out.
