After an excellent numbered event at UFC 331, the combat sports leader returns with a fairly lackluster offering from the UFC Apex headlined by one of the largest age gaps in a modern main event matchup, as 21-year-old Mexican-American upstart Raul Rosas Jr. looks to continue his climb up the rankings in his first main event showcase opposite the battle-tested Brazilian Raoni Barcelos, a mixed martial artist in the truest sense of the word. The card will also conclude the Ultimate Fighter Season 34 with a women’s strawweight and a men’s bantamweight tournament finale on the main card. The action begins with the biggest favorite on the slate, as Yazmin Jauregui returns from an extended hiatus to take on Las Vegas resident Vanessa Demopoulos in what may be a do-or-die fight for her continued UFC employment.

UFC Fight Night – Rosas Jr. vs. Barcelos: MMA DFS Picks & Betting Breakdown
Yazmin Jauregui ($9,800) vs. Vanessa Demopoulos ($6,400)
Fight Odds: -1050 Jauregui vs. +630 Demopoulos
Weight Class: W115lb. (Women’s Strawweight)
Yazmin Jauregui (3-2 UFC) is returning to the octagon after suffering devastating stoppage losses in 2 of her last 3 fights. The Mexican strawweight prospect has a +1.4 significant strike differential per minute, she has quality wins on her ledger against Iasmin Lucindo (5-2 UFC) and Sam Hughes (6-6 UFC), and she recorded 2 knockdowns against Istela Nunes (0-5 UFC) en route to a stoppage victory. The reason I would pump the brakes on the enthusiasm is that Jauregui has suffered 3 knockdowns in her first 5 appearances, and one of those knockdowns was against the aforementioned Nunes. Two of the knockdowns she suffered led to quick finishes from her opponents, so we have to call into question both her durability and her recoverability. When you couple those facts with a serious injury keeping her out of the cage for the last two years, I struggle to get to this kind of confidence interval.
Vanessa Demopoulos (5-5 UFC) has dropped 3 fights in a row, so the recently turned 38-year-old combatant is likely fighting for her continued employment in this matchup. As baffling as it may sound for a massive underdog, I could genuinely see Demopoulos winning this fight via any method of victory. Demopoulos is the only fighter in this pairing with a win via submission, posting a 4-1 record to the SUB prop as a professional and a 1-1 record to the SUB prop in the UFC (vs. 0-1 for Jauregui pro and UFC). Her only stoppage loss was an armbar facilitated by a foul (grabbing the gloves) against BJJ world champion Jaqueline Amorim (5-2 UFC). On the feet, Demopoulos has shown the higher significant strike ceiling (109 vs. 94), she is the only fighter of this pairing with a takedown in the UFC, and she has demonstrated the ability to win rounds off her back. While Demopoulos has scored just a single UFC knockdown in 10 appearances, she has also only absorbed a knockdown in return.
In a fight that oddsmakers expect to go the distance, I think Demopoulos is simply overpriced as an underdog. She has a .500 record in the promotion, the judges seem to default to her side when it is close in Las Vegas, and she has shown superior durability and staying power inside the octagon. I agree with the market that Jauregui should be favored, but I expect Demopoulos to show the same grit, toughness, and resilience that we have come to expect from her to make this an honest fight. If Demopoulos’ chin finally cracks, it will be disappointing, but she stood up to 100+ significant strikes from Kowalkiewicz, Ducote, and Horth. Historically, she has outperformed expectations, with a 4-5 record as an underdog at an average odds of +283. You have to imagine she is going to fight like a dog with her career potentially on the line.
Prediction: Either Woman via KO or Split Decision
John Castaneda ($9,200) vs. Alatengheili ($7,000)
