MMA Event Breakdown – UFC Fight Night: Yan vs. Dvalishvili

UFC Las Vegas was sandwiched between two phenomenal pay-per-view offerings for the combat sports leader, but it remains one of the most stacked and intriguing fight night offerings so far this calendar year. The main event has geopolitical implications as the charged personal rivalry between Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili transcend mere cage fights or national borders. Yan is a Russian master of sport who trains in Thailand at the world renowned Tiger Muay Thai, while Merab Dvalishvili is a Georgian immigrant who lives and trains in the United States alongside the bantamweight champion Aljamain “Funk Master” Sterling. Dvalishvili is fighting to represent his people and claim his spot in line for a title shot while Yan is looking to reassert himself in the title picture after suffering two straight split decision defeats. We begin as we always do in the first bout of the evening, this time, in the welterweight division… sort of.
