Movers and Shakers: MLB Trade Deadline Impact on Daily Fantasy
Movers and Shakers: MLB Trade Deadline Daily Fantasy Impact on Daily Fantasy

July 31st has come and passed, giving us a solid amount of movement across the league. Trades are a must-follow for the Daily Fantasy Grinder, as any trade can create an opportunity for value. Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt highlighted this years trade talk, however, the big names aren’t necessarily of interest if you’re visiting this site. In this column we are going to review the trades made over the past week that could provide the savvy Daily Grinder with an edge, and also look at how to approach periods like the Trade Deadline.
When analyzing trades for their impact on Daily Fantasy, I recommend painting a before and after picture of a player’s opportunity to in their old situation and then in their new. This may seem obvious, but the factors that go into that are any change in position, role, lineup order, quality of team, division and in rare instances, and overall situation. In rare instances it may even be important to analyze intangible changes, such as a player’s happiness with their new team.
Next one should check to see if this change in value will translate to a value pick in their Daily Fantasy contests. This involves timing and analyzing the sites you have played on. Timing is important because a players value can change drastically overnight, and you have to be prepared to grab these players immediately, which requires quick research and analysis when their is a lot of action at one time, such as the July 31st trade deadline. Where timing is less important is in non-salary leagues, specifically the Sit and Drafts on Draft Zone or the Auto-Pick drafts at FanDuel . A lot of newer players would likely be unaware of these value changes, and may opt to draft another player when salary is not a factor. When a site adjusts the salary daily, it brings to front this knowledge to players of all levels, so it would seem prudent that after a period with a lot of transactions to invest in more Sit and Drafts than you normally would to increase your edge. The second factor is adjusting this knowledge to the structure of the sites. While some sites may adjust a players value immediately after a trade, some may take the entire season to raise a players cost to his new and deserved value, if they ever do. The chart below analyzes the players with nice boosts in value for the post-trade deadline period, factoring in timing (July 29th-July 31st moves only), but not analyzing the site-by-site variables that further define each of the players value. Below is an analysis of players who should have Value Increases over the next week and should be on your Daily Fantasy radar. Some are more obvious than others, but value can be had at any level. It is important to analyze these players based on their change in cost on each site you play on before grabbing them in a contest.
RotoGrinders: Five Trade Deadline Value Boosts
| Player | Transation | Value Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brett Wallace | Astros recalled from AAA | Wallace is responsible for filling the void of Lance Berkman at 1B. He is going to be starting right away, and through 385 AAA at bats he put up a .301 avg, .868 OPS, 18 HR and 61 RBIs |
| Chris Snyder | Traded from Diamondbacks to Pirates | Initially, this didn’t look like much, but now word is out that Doumit will officially back-up Chris Snyder when he returns from the DL, and Doumit might even be moved to an outfielder role providing more opportunities for Snyder to produce |
| Roy Oswalt | Traded from Astros to Phillies | Despite a 6.00 ERA in his first start, we all know that Oswalt has the goods. If anything the 6.00 ERA helped him maintain the value from this change. The change here is obvious. Roy O. upgrades his offensive counterpart as well as his Win Rate for the remainder of the season. |
| Jordan Brown | Recalled from AAA | Jordan Brown will fill Austin Kearns spot until Michael Brantley returns to the Indians in 10 days. Brown doesn’t have huge upside, but did bat .309 with 6 HR and 63 RBIs through 272 at bats in AAA, and should be as cheap as it gets on most sites. |
| Evan Meek | Octavio Dotel traded from Pirates to Dodgers | As of now, Pirates manager John Russell hasn’t said who will close with Dotel gone. I’m leaning towards Evan Meek on this one as his ERA and WHIP have been sick all season long. That being said Joel Hanrahan has a legitimate chance to get the job as well, so keep an eye on this situation. Justin Thomas was called up with his 2.63 ERA to fill the void, and could be an option if you’re short on cash under cap. |
