This weekend, we head to Circuit of the Americas for the DuraMax Grand Prix Powered by RelaDyne. The race is Sunday at 3:30pm ET on FOX. This is the first road course race of the 2026 season. COTA is a fantastic road course. Like last season, they’re racing on the National Course instead of the Full Course. We went from a 3.41-mile, 20-turn course to a 2.3-mile, 17-turn course. The shorter track provided more passing opportunities last season, but overall, I still think the long run fall off makes the most difference here. NASCAR also added tire packs to the tracks to limit the calls on drivers cutting corners, which I think is great and takes away the questionable calls from the tower. This is another new tire for COTA this weekend. We saw this tire at the last 5 road course races in 2025. Fall off should matter as the runs go along, as we saw in practice.
The biggest thing this weekend? It’s the first race with the new 750hp road course package. McDowell said, “It’s hard to feel a difference in the power.” Gragson said, “I think the tires definitely fall off on these tracks. We know that. Goodyear, NASCAR going softer with the tire last year, year and a half, has been a big change for the road courses. You add that element of 750 horsepower in there. It’s a little bit more horsepower, but you got to take care of the tires. You can’t just be spinning the tires unnecessarily. So it seems like that’s the only thing that’s making a difference in handling on this car.” More than one driver said the increased hp and tire fall off should benefit SVG even more.
