NASCAR DFS Preview: Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500

We head to Ridgeway, Virginia for the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway. This will be the first ever night race at Martinsville, and without practice and qualifying, we will be looking at recent track history and 2020 race results.

With this new downforce package, I’m hoping we see a much better race than we saw last year. They used this package at ISM and Bristol earlier this year. I’m excited to have another mid-week race, and I hope the rain holds off. Martinsville is a .526-mile oval that has the nickname the paperclip because it looks like a paperclip. It’s a flat track, and can be compared to New Hampshire, Richmond, and ISM.

DraftKings NASCAR DFS Preview for Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500

The race is 500 laps, which is 375 potential dominator points on DraftKings, and 50 points for laps led and laps completed on FanDuel. The stages are 130, 130, and 240 laps. We will likely see at least one competition caution and wouldn’t be shocked if they did two cautions like they did for Bristol. Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski each led over 400 laps in the races here last year. In the five races before that, at least two drivers in each race led over 100 laps. Over the last four races, four drivers have led at least 10% of the laps. Over the last four races here, six drivers have at least 100 fastest laps, and Martin Truex Jr. is the only driver with over 200 fastest laps.

Over the last five races at Martinsville, Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, and Ryan Blaney are the only drivers with an average finish of tenth or better. Martin Truex Jr. is the only driver of that group that has top ten finishes in each of those five races. Truex is also averaging the most DraftKings points in those five races, and Brad Keselowski is averaging the most FanDuel points. Truex has a 13.4 average finish in the nine races outside of Daytona this season. Keselowski has the second best average finish in those nine races. Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, and Joey Logano are the only four drivers with 100+ driver ratings in the nine races outside of Daytona this season.

Over the last ten races, there has been an average of 10.2 cautions per race for an average of 72.1 laps. That takes away 35.6 fastest laps points on DraftKings. The winning driver has started inside the top ten in nine of the last ten races here. Over those ten races, Chevy has won two, Toyota has won four, and Ford has won four. Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch are the only two drivers with multiple wins in those ten races. There were only three lead changes in each of the races last year, and only 11 in each of the races in 2018. Like a lot of stats, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, and Martin Truex Jr. have the most top ten finishes in those ten races.

Looking more at the 2020 stats, Chase Elliott ranks first in green flag speed. Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski, and Joey Logano are the other drivers that rank in the top five for green flag speed. Looking at some of the cheaper drivers, Austin Dillon has a 15.0 average finish in the nine races outside of Daytona in 2020. Tyler Reddick his teammate leads the rookies with a 17.4 average finish outside of Daytona this season. After a strong 2019, Daniel Suarez has struggled with his new team. He has an average finish of 26.3 over the nine races this season, which isn’t a bad place differential floor for his starting position. I’ll be digging more into these stats during the NASCAR Breakdown show and in my By The Numbers article.
