NBA Advanced Matchups: Monday, April 13th
Welcome to the NBA Advanced Matchups, presented by Ohnjz. I’ll be taking you deep into the depths of NBA advanced stats to uncover the top plays in each NBA slate (with 4 or more games). We’ll consider a broad spectrum of metrics here, including SPORTSVU player and shot tracking, play type data, individual defensive metrics, and my personal favorite, Ohnjz’ bad-jokes-and-snarky-comments-per-article. As always, this work is meant as a guide to help you hone in on what advanced stats would suggest are some of the top plays – but it’s ultimately up to you to decide how to build your lineups.
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
THUNDER PG RUSSELL WESTBROOK
Damian Lillard can’t play defense.
I don’t know what we did to deserve this, friends, but we’re getting treated with one of the best matchups of the season tonight. After getting last night’s potentially suspension-inducing technical foul rescinded, Russell Westbrook is officially a go tonight against the Blazers. Round of applause for the NBA! Westbrook is coming off scoring a career-high 54 points against the Pacers last night, and his team still holds hope for a playoff spot. Standing between GODBROOK and the playoffs is the player who probably tops the ‘most targeted’ list in the AMP this NBA season: Blazers PG Damian Lillard.
If you’re new here, let’s get you acquainted with Lillard’s ‘defense’:
• Steph Curry: 65+ FPTS – 45 points (73.9% FG, 8-13 3PM), 10 assists
• Deron Williams: 50 FPTS — 24 points (44% FG, 4-5 3PM), 10 assists
• Tyreke Evans: 45+ FPTS — 21 points (55% FG), 9 assists
• Jordan Clarkson: 40+ FPTS — 27 points (60% FG, 2-4 3PM), 5 assists
• Chris Paul: 80+ FPTS (yes, you read that right) — 41 points (62% FG, 5-9 3PM), 17 assists
These game logs are literally from this month alone. Sure seems like an awfully generous guy. Everyone from rookies (Clarkson) to the PG elite (Paul, Curry) have bombed Lillard this season. He has produce perhaps the biggest ceiling of any individual PG matchup in the NBA. Elite PGs especially have terrorized him. Here are some high-ceiling gems from the Elites in March alone:
• Steph Curry: 55 FPTS – 33 points (59% FG, 5-9 3PM), 10 assists
• John Wall: 55+ FPTS — 21 points (43.5% FG), 11 assists
• Chris Paul: 60+ FPTS — 36 points (48% FG), 12 assists
It should be pretty clear what kind of potential we’re looking at here. But perhaps the one game log that matter most in this matchup comes from Westbrook himself:
• Russell Westbrook: 75+ FPTS – 40 points, 11 assists
The matchup is pristine. The circumstances are ideal. We can’t ask for much more. So I have just one question for you, my friends.
