NBA Advanced Matchups: Monday, April 27th
Welcome to the NBA Advanced Matchups, presented by Ohnjz. I’ll be taking you deep into the depths of NBA advanced stats to uncover the top plays in each NBA slate. We’ll consider a broad spectrum of metrics here, including SPORTSVU player and shot tracking, play type data, individual defensive metrics, and my personal favorite, Ohnjz’ bad-jokes-and-snarky-comments-per-article. As always, this work is meant as a guide to help you hone in on what advanced stats would suggest are some of the top plays – but it’s ultimately up to you to decide how to build your lineups.

UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
BULLS SG JIMMY BUTLER
Guess who? Jimmy Butler has been an AMP staple throughout Round 1, and it’s not hard to see why: Butler is casually LEADING the NBA in MPG this postseason, and is fourth in PPG (only behind guys named Curry, Davis, and Harden). He’s produced 35+ FPTS in all four games thus far and has flirted with or exceeded 50 FPTS twice. One of those 50 FPT adventures came in Game 4, where Butler scored 33 real points (12-17 FG, 5-7 3PM), his second time scoring 30+ real points this series. As you might imagine, just about everything was working for Butler in Game 4:
If you recall from the last AMP when the Bulls were playing, we explored what went wrong for Butler in Game 3’s ‘worst case’ game, where he was just 1 of 7 from deep and only scored 24 real points. Well, that cold streak from beyond the arc sure corrected itself in Game 4, as Butler hit 5 of 7 three-point attempts (fun fact: the five made threes were more than he hit in any game this season). He’s shooting the ball with incredible confidence right now, unafraid to pull up from long-range against anyone on the Bucks roster. And he’s got his teammates encouraging him to do so, too. Couple Butler’s range and confidence with his ability to explode to the rim and finish through contact, and he has 50 FPT upside tonight.
