Welcome to the NBA Advanced Matchups, presented by Ohnjz. I’ll be taking you deep into the depths of NBA advanced stats to uncover the top plays in each NBA slate (with 4 or more games). We’ll consider a broad spectrum of metrics here, including SPORTSVU player and shot tracking, play type data, individual defensive metrics, and my personal favorite, Ohnjz’ bad-jokes-and-snarky-comments-per-article. As always, this work is meant as a guide to help you hone in on what advanced stats would suggest are some of the top plays – but it’s ultimately up to you to decide how to build your lineups.
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
BLAZERS PF LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE
It seems like many of tonight’s top targets are in a rematch with team’s they’ve faced already in the last few weeks. And in most cases it’s a rematch the opposing team isn’t going to be looking forward to. LaMarcus Aldridge is the first such example, having dumped 27 points on the Suns on Friday. It was business as usual on LMA’s shot chart:
LMA had his midrange juices flowing against the Suns. The Suns didn’t seem very interested in throwing much extra pressure at LMA, and he certainly made them pay. To his credit, Markieff Morris was in LMA’s face on several of his shots – but it really didn’t matter. LMA will again be the focal point of the Blazers offense and should again threaten 20+ shot attempts. We know LMA will get his points; the clincher is if he can have an effective day on the glass (only 9 rebounds in their last meeting) and get us some additional peripherals. Considering the pace and recklessness the Suns play with, I think LMA has a great chance to outperform his last meeting with this squad.
