Welcome to the NBA Advanced Matchups, presented by Ohnjz. I’ll be taking you deep into the depths of NBA advanced stats to uncover the top plays in each NBA slate (with 4 or more games). We’ll consider a broad spectrum of metrics here, including SPORTSVU player and shot tracking, play type data, individual defensive metrics, and my personal favorite, Ohnjz’ bad-jokes-and-snarky-comments-per-article.
As always, this work is meant as a guide to help you hone in on what advanced stats would suggest are some of the top plays – but it’s ultimately up to you to decide how to build your lineups.
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
ROCKETS C DWIGHT HOWARD
Howard was the poster boy for the AMP prior to Game 2, when he then erupted for 28 real points amid a monster 50+ FPT
performance. After a TWENTY SIX rebound Game 3, Howard now has TWO straight 50+ FPT games this series – he is simply impossible for the Mavs to deal with.
The key to Howard has never been his ability, it’s been his minutes; with two straight 30+ minute games, the production was almost sure to follow. With James Harden’s high-volume shooting and frequent drives to the hoop, Howard has soaked up rebounds, especially rebounds of the offensive variety. Howard gobbled up a ridiculous ELEVEN offensive rebounds in Game 3; even more impressive than that output was the fact that those 11 rebounds came on just 12 chances for offensive rebounds.
Howard actually leads the NBA in Rebound % this postseason. His post presence has also meant he’s been in prime position for put-backs or easy buckets when Harden dishes, as Howard has scored the MOST field goals within 5 ft of the basket this postseason. So long as Dwight sees 30+ minutes again today, foul trouble is the only thing capable of preventing a third straight monster game tonight.
